A great introduction to Talend's Open Studio

Following a brief and important introduction, the instruction starts with showing you how to download Open Studio from Talend's website and guides you through the installation of the software onto your PC. The Talend software comes with example data and jobs. There is an appendix in the book that shows you how to install the sample data. The book effectively uses the sample data to walk you through the basics of file transformation, then moves swiftly on to working with databases.

For the database examples, you will need to download and install MySQL, which is an open source database that can run anywhere. You will also need the tools to administer it. The book gives you the trusted links to download MySQL, but you will need to refer to the MySQL documentation on how to install and get running. However, this is really worth doing. MYSQL is free and very easy to use.

Once you have MySQL running, the rest of the book really flies. You start to learn the really useful stuff for ETL, like connecting to databases, creating and amending tables, filtering, sorting, enriching, normalising and aggregating data. Once you are proficient, the book turns to automation, orchestration, file transferring and the generation of variables. You can then join individual jobs together to make flow processes that can make decisions and take different actions based on many different outcomes.

If you think that all this sounds complicated, you are going to be shocked. It is not. If I can do it, most people can. You can read about what I did in a weekend with the Open Studio here. However, if you are installing Talend on Mac OS-X or a PC with Ubuntu or any other unix operating system, the book's file paths are for windows computers (i.e. C:\\My Documents etc...) but I'm sure you can work that out.

The whole layout of the book is very straight-forward, with plenty of pictures on how your work should look. The language is simple and free of jargon. Explanations are just the right balance of detail and simplicity. It is obvious that a lot of care and consideration has gone into making each chapter informative yet succinct.

Excellent way to get started with Talend 5.x

Hi, I'd like to recommend "Getting Started with Talend Open Studio for Data Integration" by Jonathan Bowen over at [...] for people wanting to do data integration with Talend 5.x!

Jonathan did a very good job in his approach to teaching you how to use Talend, which is, by the way, free data integration software. Instead of creating a reference manual, which is sometimes handy, he created a walk-through of most of the processes you would normally use to get data from point A to point B in many well thought-out examples. As I was reading and working through the chapters, since I had already become familiar with many of the processes in Talend, I found myself thinking "Jonathan should have include information about ....", but soon I was reading where he had indeed included such information a little further into the book. I learned several things I did not already know and learned from better examples than I could have created. The book includes downloadable data that you will need to complete the exercises and the instructions to load that data is in Appendix A.

One thing to be forewarned about: if you just want to learn by reading, you may be disappointed in this book. There are not enough screen captures for all the jobs presented to let you just read through as if you were watching a video, but if you actually work through the examples, you will like the concise nature of the steps given. The author is generous with warnings and explanations, so you should not get lost anywhere as you work through each chapter. Some examples do build on prior examples and, so, you should take things in order.
There are a couple of things I wished the author had included that I have found useful in my Talend jobs, but had to learn them on my own. One is job logging and the other is error handling; Talend has very good features built in for both, but maybe he considered those topics more advanced than a beginner would want.
Overall, I was very please with this excellent tutorial. It will get you up an running with Talend quickly, especially if you are starting with no experience with Talend at all.

Bruce Smith is a former Technical Editor of Acorn User magazine and founder of Bruce Smith Books. Around half of his 150 books have covered the topic of computers and computer programming. Very practical

It is easy to find good books about C# and Java. However, for many more specialized development tools it is hard to find a book that provides what a beginner needs. In many cases, a book thoroughly covers the language commands, but leaves the reader staring a a blank command line wondering "What, exactly, do I need to type to compile and run my program?" Bruce Smith's books do not fall into this trap. Smith provides not only the necessary coaching and instruction in assembly language for the Raspberry Pi's ARM processor, but also gives clear practical instructions for getting everything to work.

One of the reasons I bought the book is its introduction to the ARM vector floating-point coprocessor, a topic that often gets short-shrift from authors. If I had to pick one nit with Smith's book, he fails to mention a little trap with assembling coprocessor code. Smith starts the book using the GNU assembler "as" and then moves to using gcc later in the book, which is entirely reasonable. However, some readers might like to know that if you want to assemble vector coprocessor code with "as" rather than gcc you must include the command-line parameter "-mfpu=vfpv2".

Whether you are looking just to have some fun learning assembly language with your Raspberry PI or whether you view the PI as a stepping-stone to greater things ARM, Bruce Smith's book definitely belongs on your shelf.

I'm totally new to Raspberry Pi, Linix, and to Arm processors. This book is clearly written with easy to follow examples. I'm up to chapter 12 so far.

I bought the kindle edition and am reading it on my IPad. The formatting, pictures, and text flow are all superb.

There are simple techniques that you can use to challenge your unhelpful behaviours and thoughts. This book makes the personal growth process so much easier and the author really understands how to help. I wish that I had found a book like this years ago.

An excellent work book that is easy to read and understand. Plenty of examples and exercises to do that makes you have a good look at yourself and clear emotional baggage that may be holding you back. Be prepared to put in the work neccesary to make life worth living. Highly recommended!

One Artist's Vision of World War II!

There have been very few World War II art books published showcasing the work of just one artist. PORTRAITS OF COMBAT by master painter James Dietz comes to mind but none others. However now we have LET US NEVER FORGET, STORIES AND PAINTINGS OF WORLD WAR II by Francis McGinley. A 2012 American History Press, McGinley's book is a very wide-ranging collection of 94, mainly full-color, paintings depicting various incidents and personalities of the Second World War.

McGinley's artworks are displayed in roughly a chronological order. First comes several paintings of Kristallnacht and pre-war Nazi oppression of the Jews followed by images of Pearl Harbor, the Bataan Death March, the Doolittle Raid and so on with the final painting being the Nuremburg War Crimes Trial. Each image is accompanied by its back-story.

In terms of subject material, McGinley's scope encompasses air, land and sea events. The book includes images of Battle of the Bulge infantrymen, strikes on Japanese carriers at Midway, Rangers hitting the beach on D-Day, Audie Murphy winning the MoH, the sinking of the transport Dorchester, Tom McGuire in action with this P-38, the Slapton Sands disaster, 9th Division infantry attacking Metz fortresses, portraits of MacArthur, etc.

The result is a dramatic, compelling picture-and-word remembrance of the monumental events of the Second World War. Recommended.
