About the Author
Bruce Allen Murphy is the Fred Morgan Kirby Professor of Civil Rights at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he teaches American constitutional law and civil rights and liberties, American politics, and biographical writing. He is the author of Scalia"; "The Brandeis-Frankfurter Connection: The Secret Political Activities of Two Supreme Court Justices"; "Fortas: The Rise and Ruin of a Supreme Court Justice";" "and "Wild Bill: The Legend and Life of William O. Douglas". Murphy lives with his wife in the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania.

The text reads alright. It has a fairly fluid style and works hard to include as many current reverences and illustrations to the material as possible. My only complaint is that in putting in so many recent examples of political concepts, there is no room left to give details on how the process actually works. For example, in the section on the appointment powers of the President, one of the three paragraphs was simply on the use of recess appointments by the Bush administration. What I wanted to know about was what positions are appointed, what type of majority vote (simple, 2/3) was needed for approval, if any, and what powers do the other branches of government have to check these powers. I appreciate the contemporary color recent and relevant examples give, but I think they take up too much space and give the reader the impression that a (very expensive)book that went to press three years ago is already out of date, when in actuality there is more than 250 years worth of material to pull from.

Overly simplistic textbook for college

I have to concur with Rebecca's review although in addition to placing too much emphasis on vague examples, the writing style is overly simplistic for a college textbook. The author's attempt to do as such reduces concision, considering that this is also the effect of giving too much space to poor examples of political concepts in sacrifice of clear explanation of those concepts.
