William Craig (1929–1997) was an American historian and novelist. Born and raised in Concord, Massachusetts, he interrupted his career as an advertising salesman to appear on the quiz show Tic-Tac-Dough in 1958. With his $42,000 in winnings—a record-breaking amount at the time—Craig enrolled at Columbia University and earned both an undergraduate and a master’s degree in history. He published his first book, The Fall of Japan, in 1967. A narrative history of the final weeks of World War II in the Pacific, it reached the top ten on the New York Times bestseller list and was deemed “virtually flawless” by the New York Times Book Review. In order to write Enemy at the Gates (1973), a documentary account of the Battle of Stalingrad, Craig travelled to three continents and interviewed hundreds of military and civilian survivors. A New York Times bestseller, the book inspired a film of the same name starring Jude Law and Joseph Fiennes. In addition to his histories of World War II, Craig wrote two acclaimed espionage thrillers: The Tashkent Crisis (1971) and The Strasbourg Legacy (1975).

Will former Nazis rise to power once more? Grab a sub, a drink, hide the phone and settle in for one astonishing read!

Join CIA agent Corcoran as he unravels a plot to place those Nazis that escaped decades ago following the end of World War II back in power in Germany.
Sent to Germany to investigate the possibility of a Soviet buildup prior to a possible invasion of Western Europe, Corcoran gets in touch with his old friend, Soviet KGB agent, Glasnov, and as the suspense and tension builds in this superb thriller, as the secret bunker with Willie Brandt and most of the other top leaders is about to blow, pages begin flying, fingernails bitten until the last incredible page.
Grab a sub, a drink, hide the phone and settle in for one astonishing read!

Interesting enough thriller.

A Net Galley book and an interesting enough thriller with Espionage undertones, without being the best book ever.
It is the mid-70s and some sleeper Nazis have decided the time is right to overthrow Willy Brandt’s government and instigate the Fourth Reich. Plans that have been 30-plus years in the making. Matt Corcoran is the American agent, trying to join all the dots up and with the assistance of an adversary-cum-friend in Russian intelligence thwart the plan – once of course he has realised what is going on.
There’s misinformation and red herrings aplenty – why are the Russian’s ramping up the Cold War with troop movements towards the West? Is it Baader-Meinhof Gang raiding American arms depots in Germany? Why now are the Arabs instigating an oil-shortage which could cripple an Allied response to Russian aggression, or is it all part of a bigger smokescreen?
Interesting plot, though I don’t know too much about the time period to offer a considered response as to whether it was all plausible, though the author does a convincing job in persuading me. Could the Nazis have made a comeback? Would the civilised world have tolerated them?
Not too much depth to our characters, which in this instance was quite good because it kept things hurrying along. Enough there to ensure the main characters were more than brush-strokes but insufficient to allow for any feelings of fellowship from this reader, for the good guys. That said, only brush strokes or not – who doesn’t find Fascism and Nazis odious.
Overall a fairly quick read in a month where my reading has slowed up. Interesting and a bit of food for thought on a “what if” basis, but I wouldn’t especially rush to read anything else by the author.

A good read

The Strasbourg Legacy has a different twist about the dangers during the Cold War given state of East/West relations and the desires of Nazis leaders still on the run post WW2. Just who is helping who? Shades of present troubles in Syria. Recommended
