Exciting and well researched tale of Texas in 1915

"The Warlords" is based , like much of Braun's work ,on historic fact and in this case revolves around events on the Texas-Mexico border in 1915.
The book opens in Berlin,in the offices of the German High Command ,on May tenth 1915.World war 1 is raging and the Germans are concerned at the possible entry of the USA into the war ,on the side of the Allies.American public opinion has been inflamed against Germany by the sinking of the "Lusitania" by a German submarine just 3 days earlier.The Kaiser orders his military intelligence people to distract American attention from the war in Europe by starting a war between the USA and Mexico.Arrangements are entrusted to Colonels van Kleist and Mueller who plan to finance the return from exile in Madrid of the deposed former Mexican dictator ,Huerta .The plan is to destabilise the border region by a series of raida into Texas by disaffected Mexicans that will prompt a US response and potentially cause the overthrow of the Mexican government .
America is advised of the plan by British Intelligence and the FBI despatch agent Frank Gordon to the area to monitor and prevent the situation from worsening .He is ordered to work in conjunction with the Texas Rangers,and discovers the situation is hightly volatile and dangerous.The region is awash with racial animosity and tensions run high.The fanatical Mexican nationalist ,Augustin Garza finds a ready audience for his inflammatory speeches and pamphlets ,revolving around the "plan of San Diego",calling for the return to Mexican control of Texas ,New Mexico and Arizona and the return to the Native tribes of all tribal lands ,not to mention the murder of all male "Anglos"aged 16 or over.
The raids grow in frequency and violence as Grza's support mushrooms and his resources increase ,thanks to unlimited German funding .Gordon needs to work on two fronts -finding information about German /Mexican plans by espionage and also repelling the raids .
The book is impeccably researched and well and unfussily written.Fans of the Rangers may be uneasy at the portrait of the force that emerges -individual agents are openly racist and the methods deployed are not always wholly legal.Overall this is a book I recommend to those who would like to explore a realtively little known area of US history (The epilogue tells the reader of events subsequent to the actual end of the novel).this is well up to Mr Braun's usual high level of quality.

THIS BOOK IS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY ..I LOVE THIS PERIOD OF HISTORY, AND THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN GOOD HISTORICAL FICTION WRITING -JUST BUY IT, ENJOY THE TALE, AND THANK ME LATER!
PS- HEY HOLLYWOOD, TRY SOMETHING ORIGINAL ..THIS TALE WOULD MAKE, FOR A GREAT MOVIE!

the book is at least a 4star! it is the first novel that i have read from matt braun and i look forward to read more of his books! i am not sure how accurate he is as to the usa. almost
declaring war against mexico! matt is a very
supeb writer and it was difficult to put this book aside!
