So far I love this book. It has clear useful information on design. Things like a formula for doing ovals. He says clear things like (paraphrase) if you increase on every round of a circle you will eventually begin to bunch up so crochet a row without increasing to fix this, and if you increase in the same location the edges of your circle will begin to flatten out so move your increases around.

As the book progresses it gets more creative, but I've only skimmed those pages. He goes through freeform crochet, crocheting with your fingers, spirals and other things. He also has stitch patterns which I haven't gone over yet. The book is from 79, so not many color pictures. But I haven't seen any recent crochet books that go through quite the same material. Unfortunately its due back at the library, and it won't let me renew urgh. I think it may be worth $60, depending on what your goals are. I rented my copy through a university library system.

Great resource for the serious crochet artist.

I loved freeform crochet back in the 70s and was recently bemoaning the fact that few of today's crochet books and magazines teach you about the structure of stitches and how to combine stitches into unique patterns. This books does just that (plus the 70s pics are so cool!). This is not for someone who wants a pattern to make something (none in here), but it is for someone interested in the characteristics of each crochet stitch and what happens when you combine them. I'm not usually into the technical side of crochet, but I love the approach in this book.

this is such an important book, I'm astonished that it has never gone into reprint. it speaks to the mathmatics of crochet and the creative potential of the art.

Scholarly Look at the Rise of France

This book, written by the notable historian Jean Dunbain (of St. Anne's College at Oxford), is a truly scholarly look at the emergence of "France" from the ninth through the twelfth centuries. The book is written for an academic and/or scholarly audience, and is built off a rich source list of primary and secondary documents. The work begins at The Treaty of Verdun and immediately begins the necessary examination of Carolingian rulers and then moves through to principalities and formative trends of each of the periods up through the twelfth century. The account is highly detailed with a deep and varied text that seems to leave little uncovered throughout the the Ile-de-France region as "France" eventually expands its rule outward over time. There are a few basic maps and genealogical charts, but illustrations are not a major factor in the text.

The book is excellent for anyone interested in the topic and willing to do the requisite careful reading, but would also serve well in any undergraduate or graduate university history curriculum. It is a wonderful and insightful examination of how France originated that employs only the best scholarship in documenting the story. With the sheer number of individuals and places that are examined, it will remain as a reference of note long after the first read of the book. Five stars.

Some great modern piano rags

This is a collection of piano rags -- some difficult -- that date back to the 1970s. Even though they were written long after the Great Ragtime Piano Era they still stand up to the classic rags published by John Stark: Joplin, Scott and Lamb.

These rags are fun to play and sound great. They are of intermediate difficulty, but a few are more difficult. Some of them have interesting instructions for the performer, such as tongue clicking (like a snake), foot stomping, etc. The only gripe is that the binding makes the book hard to keep open. You have to get some sort of clasp to keep the pages from closing. It's maddening, when you're trying to read a passage, and the book closes. It can be overcome, though. Overall very fun, original, beautiful rags. Highly recommended!

Not much to add to Seurat's review, except that a few more suggestions for fingering would have been helpful to this intermediate pianist. Some of the compositions are very challenging indeed, others more approachable. I recommend 'Graceful Ghost' and 'Last Rag' for the less-skilled; both are beautiful. The sly 'Eternal Feminine' is also possible for the non-expert. Amazon's price is excellent.

I really liked this book, my only problem with it is that it's one of those that everything kind of becomes too perfect. After all those years apart, they suddenly just move in together like nothing ever happened, it seems a little crazy. but again, it was a good book, definitely a good story and I got really involved with the characters.

I loved, LOVED this book! Perfect Timing is a brilliant combination of romance, good story telling and intrigue! I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy women’s fiction, as well as those who are romance purists. The characters are well developed and the author’s use of a past/present storyline is spot on. Above all, Spinella’s dialogue is a page-turner, witty and meaningful, bringing a real voice to each character. I rooted for Isabel from start to finish. Having read the author’s first novel, Beautiful Disaster, I was anticipating a hero-type of guy that would be irresistible. She delivers, not by repeating the same winning character, Flynn, in Beautiful Disaster but by bringing a whole different kind of sympathetic and unexpected hero to the story.

Laura Spinella is the only author I have ever read that can move from the present to the past so seamlessly. The past is where I got to know and love Aiden and Isabel, even with their speckled histories. The present is where I got to hope that true love, first love, is a real thing and will overcome all the obstacles. It was so touching to see how their friendship progressed from a young love to an adult relationship. Aiden is truly one of a kind, the kind that every girl hopes to have in her life.

As the story is told, there are twists and turns that I never saw coming. One in particular had me setting the book down and making me think about what was being told. This twist truly makes the story one that I will be talking about for a long while and be happily sharing with all my fellow readers. This is a book of love conquering all with a ton of emotion and amazing writing.

This is a book that I will recommend to EVERYONE. Laura Spinella wrote another amazing book that is sure to touch anyone who reads it.

Robin Flowerdew is Professor of Human Geography at the University of St Andrews; David Martin is Professor of Geography at the University of Southampton. Both have extensive teaching and research experience in methods in human geography.

About the Author
David Martin is the author of We've All Got Bellybuttons! illustrated by Randy Cecil, and Piggy and Dad Go Fishing, illustrated by Frank Remkiewicz, among other books. He lives in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom.

D. W. MARTIN spends his days working in book publishing and his nights writing and performing comedy at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. To be "fair": I believe they listed the condition as "fair" and I would say it was "fair"ly thrashed. This is not to say it wasn't readable (it very much was - all was totally fine and the book served its purpose); however I the binding had definitely been put through a lawnmower before being sent...

Unlike many other trade regimes, the European Union forbids the use of inter-state retaliation to enforce its obligations, and rules out the use of common 'escape' mechanisms such as anti-dumping between the EU member states. How does the EU do without these mechanisms that appear so vital to the political viability of other international trade regimes, including the World Trade Organization? How, therefore, is the European legal order, with the European Court of Justice at its centre, able to be so much more binding and intrusive than the legal obligations of many other trade regimes?

This book puts forward a new explanation of a key part of the European Union's legal system, emphasising its break with the inter-state retaliation mechanisms and how Europe's special form of legal integration is facilitated by intra-industry trade, parliamentary forms of national government, and European welfare states.

It argues first that the EU member states have allowed the enforcement of EU obligations by domestic courts in order to avoid the problems associated with enforcing trade obligations by constant threats of trade retaliation. It argues second that the EU member states have been able to accept such a binding form of dispute settlement and treaty obligation because the policy adjustments required by the European legal order were politically acceptable. High levels of intra-industry trade reduced the severity of the economic adjustments required by the expansion of the European market, and inclusive and authoritative democratic institutions in the member states allowed policy-makers to prioritise a general interest in reliable trading relationships even when policy changes affected significant domestic lobbies. Furthermore, generous national social security arrangements protected national constituents against any adverse consequences arising from the expansion of European law and the intensification of the European market.

The European legal order should therefore be understood as a legalized dispute resolution institution well suited to an international trade and integration regime made up of highly interdependent parliamentary welfare states.
