So far I love this book. It has clear useful information on design. Things like a formula for doing ovals. He says clear things like (paraphrase) if you increase on every round of a circle you will eventually begin to bunch up so crochet a row without increasing to fix this, and if you increase in the same location the edges of your circle will begin to flatten out so move your increases around.

As the book progresses it gets more creative, but I've only skimmed those pages. He goes through freeform crochet, crocheting with your fingers, spirals and other things. He also has stitch patterns which I haven't gone over yet. The book is from 79, so not many color pictures. But I haven't seen any recent crochet books that go through quite the same material. Unfortunately its due back at the library, and it won't let me renew urgh. I think it may be worth $60, depending on what your goals are. I rented my copy through a university library system.

Great resource for the serious crochet artist.

I loved freeform crochet back in the 70s and was recently bemoaning the fact that few of today's crochet books and magazines teach you about the structure of stitches and how to combine stitches into unique patterns. This books does just that (plus the 70s pics are so cool!). This is not for someone who wants a pattern to make something (none in here), but it is for someone interested in the characteristics of each crochet stitch and what happens when you combine them. I'm not usually into the technical side of crochet, but I love the approach in this book.

Scholarly Look at the Rise of France

This book, written by the notable historian Jean Dunbain (of St. Anne's College at Oxford), is a truly scholarly look at the emergence of "France" from the ninth through the twelfth centuries. The book is written for an academic and/or scholarly audience, and is built off a rich source list of primary and secondary documents. The work begins at The Treaty of Verdun and immediately begins the necessary examination of Carolingian rulers and then moves through to principalities and formative trends of each of the periods up through the twelfth century. The account is highly detailed with a deep and varied text that seems to leave little uncovered throughout the the Ile-de-France region as "France" eventually expands its rule outward over time. There are a few basic maps and genealogical charts, but illustrations are not a major factor in the text.

The book is excellent for anyone interested in the topic and willing to do the requisite careful reading, but would also serve well in any undergraduate or graduate university history curriculum. It is a wonderful and insightful examination of how France originated that employs only the best scholarship in documenting the story. With the sheer number of individuals and places that are examined, it will remain as a reference of note long after the first read of the book. Five stars.

Editor: Dorothy C. Wong is Associate Professor of East Asian Art at the University of Virginia. In addition to Chinese Steles: Pre-Buddhist and Buddhist Use of a Symbolic Form (2004), she has published articles on many topics of Buddhist art of medieval China. Her recent research focuses on the transmission and transformation of Buddhist art forms from China (and India) to Korea and Japan in the seventh and eighth centuries. Design: Eric M. Field is an Information Technology Scientist for Applied and Advanced Technologies at the University of Virginia School of Architecture. With a background in both architectural design and computational systems, he specializes in advanced computing applications, information systems, and fabrication technology for architecture and design analysis. He has published scholarly essays as well as contributed to architectural exhibitions.

Some great modern piano rags

This is a collection of piano rags -- some difficult -- that date back to the 1970s. Even though they were written long after the Great Ragtime Piano Era they still stand up to the classic rags published by John Stark: Joplin, Scott and Lamb.

These rags are fun to play and sound great. They are of intermediate difficulty, but a few are more difficult. Some of them have interesting instructions for the performer, such as tongue clicking (like a snake), foot stomping, etc. The only gripe is that the binding makes the book hard to keep open. You have to get some sort of clasp to keep the pages from closing. It's maddening, when you're trying to read a passage, and the book closes. It can be overcome, though. Overall very fun, original, beautiful rags. Highly recommended!

Not much to add to Seurat's review, except that a few more suggestions for fingering would have been helpful to this intermediate pianist. Some of the compositions are very challenging indeed, others more approachable. I recommend 'Graceful Ghost' and 'Last Rag' for the less-skilled; both are beautiful. The sly 'Eternal Feminine' is also possible for the non-expert. Amazon's price is excellent.
