A decent book, but a little *too* concise

This is a good book for linguistics majors, especially if you intend to go to grad school. The book has definitions of just about every word I've needed to look up, but sometimes the definitions aren't very clear and are worded in the same difficult jargon that makes you need to look these words up in the first place. Longer definitions would be helpful. But in cases where words learned in class need clarifying, it does offer another explanation. Overall, it's worth the price, but I'll be on the lookout for other linguistics dictionaries that have clearer explanations.

Very handy and surprisingly complete

(The following comments are based on the first edition, which I bought a year ago. I see that Oxford published a second edition a few months ago.)

I have found P. H. Matthews' dictionary of linguistic terms to compare very favorably with David Crystal's A Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics. In spite of the considerable difference in size and price, I have found that Matthews' work has more of the terms I want to look up, and his explanations are often more to the point. I don't use it much for phonetic terminology, so any deficiency in this regard vis a vis Crystal has not been an issue for me.

I appreciate seeing the names of at least a few of the most outstanding linguists in history listed. New students in the field should find these references to the luminaries helpful. Their names show up in the literature with some regularity, and it is nice to have some place to turn for a quick summary of their contributions.

For students of linguistics, I recommend that you get Matthews' dictionary first, if you can't afford both at once, and then get Crystal's dictionary later. It is always helpful to have more than one reference of this sort on your shelf.

Great for the beginner

I am taking my first linguistics class, and it's graduate level so its fast-paced and content-packed. And it's all in Spanish. Aside from our regular textbook, the professor, who has a doctorate in Spanish Linguistics, recommended the Oxford Linguistics dictionary. It helped SO much. It breaks the definitions down into more beginner-friendly terms.

The best introduction to the study of truth for undergraduates available

Wrenn's book is a great introduction, suitable for motivated senior undergraduates and above. Written in a clear and accessible manner (like most of the other volumes in this series), the book introduces the reader to the study of truth, which is of central importance to contemporary analytic philosophy.

The book focuses primarily on theories of truth rather than issues having to do with formal treatments of truth, including formal truth theories and the semantic paradoxes. This isn't necessarily a fault, as one can only cover so much in an introduction, but readers should be aware.

You WILL "find a bit of yourself" in this book!!!

Olga Polomcova loves any kind of art. In the beginning of the book she is ill and has to stay home from school for 4 days.Other children just stay home 2 days;but since she had T.B when she was six she is sick longer.What we also find happenning is her cousin Joe runs away and comes back.He is a writer and an adventurer.So Olga meets a little girl named Sonia and her sibblings;and sort of "babysits" them and takes care of them,as their parents are not there.She also meets Imro,and starts to like him a little.Before you know it she's in love.But her family,especially her father,desn't like him;and then her father forbids her to see Sonia! this is an interesting book about a sensetive girl growing up.And I think it has helped me grow up!

This book and accompanying compact disc provide a rare excursion in the innovative ways a community of Haitian migrants to South Florida has maintained religious traditions and familial connections. It demonstrates how religion, ritual, and aesthetic practices affect lives on both sides of the Caribbean, and it debunks myths of exotic and primitive vodou (often spelled “voodoo”), which have long been used against Haitians.
As Karen Richman shows, Haitians at home and in migrant settlements make ingenious use of audio and video tapes to extend the boundaries of their ritual spaces and to reinforce their moral and spiritual anchors to one another. The book and CD were produced in collaboration to give the reader intimate access to this new expressive media. Sacred songs are recorded on tapes and circulated among the communities. Migrants are able to hear not only the performance sounds—drumming, singing, and chatter—but also a description, as narrators tell of offerings, sacrifices, prayers, and the exchange of possessions. Spirits who inhabit the bodies of ritual actors are aware of the recording devices and personally address the absent migrants, sometimes warning them of their financial obligations to family members in Haiti. The migrants’ dependence on their home village is dramatically reinforced while their economic independence is restricted. Using standard ethnographic methods, Richman’s work illuminates the connections among social organization, power, production, ritual, and aesthetics. With its transnational perspective, it shows how labor migration has become one of Haiti’s chief economic exports.

This welcome, timely volume and its accompanying audio CD provide detailed documentation of the persistence of religious rituals and aesthetic practices among Haitians in the Caribbean and in the United States. Richman's study spans two decades of research with Haitian migrants in Virginia and South Florida, as well as a year and a half of fieldwork in Haiti. Especially noteworthy and illuminating are chapter 5, which traces changes in ritual and kinship patterns, and chapter 6, which contains an excellent discourse on "Guinean authenticity." The included CD gives valuable insights into Haitian aesthetic principles that could never have been otherwise conveyed. Highly recommended. Stephen D.
