Grade 3-5. Through this fictionalized account, the incredible story of the evacuation of Dunkirk in May, 1940, is brought to life. Borden provides the facts through the voice and eyes of a young girl who, with her fisherman father, joins the rescue effort, hoping to find her brother, John, somewhere among the thousands of men who have been fighting in France. Foreman's watercolor paintings add to the drama, excitement, and poignancy of the narrative. The flowing transparent hues of the scenes are just right for the watery setting, and the artist adds a stronger concentration of pigments to evoke the terror of beaches and ships under attack. Foreman provides panoramic views of the ragtag fleet of boats, the burning beaches, and thousands of men fleeing; then he moves in for a stirring close-up of a floundering soldier pulled over the side of the fishingboat. He also adds the visual story of a little dog, clutched in the arms of that near-drowning soldier, and then held tightly by the young narrator as she waits anxiously for word of her brother. The book ends with further facts about the evacuation and an excerpt from Winston Churchill's stirring speech ("We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing-grounds..."). The famous World War II rescue at Dunkirk, where small civilian boats ferried the stranded British army from the beaches of France, is told in the voice of a young English girl, who sails with her father on their fishing boat as part of the rescue fleet. She narrates the adventure quietly in simple free verse ("I saw men who were brave, / and some who were not"). Foreman's realistic watercolor scenes of sea and shore and sky show "the wild mess of an army on the run" with dramatic understatement. Always the girl thinks about her brother, John, who must be somewhere in those black lines of soldiers waiting for a boat to take them home. Words and pictures convey the physical detail of the event, from the boatmen's careful navigation of the channel to the view of the oily smoke above the burning harbor and the German planes strafing the amazing armada. A small map, an author's note, and a famous quote from Churchill provide historical context. Hazel Rochman

Reality and Poetry

I first learned of the Battle of Dunkirk when I read 'The Snow Goose' at the age of 11. I am sick of Harry Potter and its ilk and want my grandson to learn about stories that last. I realized he neither knows nor cares about history, nor is he so a precocious reader as I was at his age (pre-television). I decided this would have to be a gradual process, and that he will have to know about one of the great heroic events in our history before 'The Snow Goose' would be meaningful to him.
To this end, I discovered 'The Little Ships' and found myself with tears in my eyes over the beauty of the writing. For example, when the little girl is relating what she sees in the water (broken planks, army coats and boots) as she and her father are ferrying the soldiers, she sums it up by ' . . . and everything soldiers leave behind when they can take only themselves.'
The 'Snow Goose' will have to wait - although I certainly enjoyed reading it again. He's simply not old enough, but he's ready for 'The Little Ships.' The beauty of the writing and the wonderful illustrations will capture him. Best of all, the basic story is true. I'm buying two more copies - one for my library and one for the grade school. Children should know that, while we humans are capable of hideous acts, we are also capable of breathtaking acts of bravery, and they should be moved as they read about them.

I thought the event was like crossing the Ptomac-all in one morning, but it took days. Great historical fiction with beautiful artwork told from the perspective of a child whose dad owns one of the little boats and is willing to be useful in a time of great need.

Great for young people

I am old enough to have lived through WWII. Much emphasis, rightly so, is given to the horrors of the war: the concentration camps, the Burma death march and the like.

It is far too easy to forget the incredible bravery of the every day civilian. If Londoners had not held out during the blitz, if the British people had not brought home the troops from the beaches of Dunkirk, our history might well have had a different outcome. These everyday civilians held out until America was geared up to take part. If they had not done so our history might well have had a different outcome.

This was indeed "Their finest hour."

Yet, until now, the only book I have had in my library that commemorates these incredible feats is Paul Gallico's beautiful, "The Snow Goose." Now I have added "The Little Ships."

This is a lovely little book, with delightful illustrations. It is a fine book for introducing a child to this heroic tale.

I could wish there were a more complete, historical book written before there is no one left who actually remember those heroic days.

Brilliant resource

Zraly is the master of wine education for energetically bringing to light, simplifying and making deliciously understandable even the most complex aspects of winedom. So I was at first unsure why he created this anthology of other people's words on the subject. What I found was the holy grail and foundation material that has been the basis for wine educators, wine writers and winemakers now and for the past 40 years. Debunking wine myths with facts and studies, enhancing traditions with rich readable reasoning, this succinct body of works is one of the great reference books of our time.

A LITERARY CONFECTION!

In the wine book genre we have so many serious and ponderous books, so much reference and finely organized information on grape varieties, regions, vintages etc., it just becomes exhausting at times. Do publishers not realize that some times we just want to read about wine for pleasure?

The irony is that most wine writers have written some very pleasureable pieces, but it takes an insightful, well read colleague like Kevin Zraly to gather together all these delightful tidbits. Working in the tradition of the great wine writers whom mentored Kevin, he was able to emulate the classic wine pleasure book, THE FIRESIDE BOOK OF WINE by our mutual friend, Alex Bespaloff< RIP. He gathered the best from the best, with his great personal presence in the wine biz, and the universal love and respect he enjoys from his colleagues, Kevin is perhaps the only living author who could assemble this delicious assortment of wine literary candy.
Worth twice the price and with Amazon selling for half the price it is worth 10 times what you will pay for this book!

Wine a bit - You'll feel better

`The Ultimate Wine Companion' is a handsome book with sturdy cream coloured pages. It gives you readings about wine and an education. There are many excerpts by wine authorities, something is written about each one as their excerpt begins. There are tales of excess...spending $25,000 for a week of wine tasting and food and the real story of California wining the wine tasting in France.

Sections include thoughts on wine, tasting wine, wine and food, making wine and the different regions of the old world and the new world. There is a history of each area, information how the wine is produced and what the finished product is like. Examples of labels are shown, information about the vineyards and vintages.

PreSchool-Grade 1-In this second book featuring the star of Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! (Hyperion, 2003), the shoe is on the other foot. Once again, the action starts on the title page, with the pigeon's joyous discovery of a hot dog. However, his initial delight is dampened when a small, wide-eyed duckling appears and asks, in a seemingly innocent manner, "Is that a `hot dog'?" The interloper's younger status is conveyed not just through his tinier size, but also through his dialogue, which is presented in smaller, rounder font. Though the duckling never directly asks for a bite, his incessant questioning-"Would you say that it tastes like chicken?"-infuriates the pigeon. Ultimately, the duckling's subtle approach proves successful, and both birds happily share the treat. Children, especially those with younger siblings, will have come up with this obvious solution long before the pigeon does. Willems's deceptively simple cartoon drawings convincingly portray his protagonist's emotional dilemma, from his initial joy to his frustration and struggle over what he wants to do versus what he knows is right.

PreS. In this follow-up to Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus [BKL S 1 03], the wheedling pigeon with the short fuse meets his match. "Oooooh! A hot dog!" he cries, as he zooms in for a landing on the first page. Before he can enjoy his scavenged treat, though, a little duckling scuttles over and begins asking numerous questions: "Is that a 'hot dog'?" "What do they taste like?" The pigeon loses his temper in a wing-flapping rant before the duckling innocently suggests that they share the dog, thus sparing the pigeon the frustration of having to explain the taste. Share it they do, but the pigeon knows he has been had: "You know, you're pretty smart for a duckling." Once again, Willems uses artistic minimalism (each page shows only the birds and the hot dog, rendered in basic lines) and spare, hilarious dialogue to convey surprisingly realistic emotions. Preschoolers who recognized themselves in the tantrum-throwing pigeon of the previous title will also see themselves in the calm, shrewd duckling that knows just how to get his way. Gillian Engberg

As an elementary school librarian, every year I try to have an ice-breaker story for the children on their first visit to the library, especially the kindergarten students. Last year my first-day read aloud was "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus". It shocked their socks off to see the librarian stomping her feet and yelling "Let me drive the bus!" Some students requested I read it every week all year. Thank you for providing another "pigeon story" for me to start this year. Although the "hotdog" story doesn't provide opportunity for interaction that the "bus" did, it provides me the chance to stomp and yell "It just tastes like a hot dog, okay!?" Then later in the school year, when my real personality comes through, they won't be frightened. They will see me as the pigeon. The first grade students who watched my pigeon antics last year will be expecting me to top last year's performance. They will love "The pigeon finds a hotdog". I do. Please keep the pigeon stories coming.

About the Author
DESMOND OON, PH.D. Desmond Oon is a Master Professional of the United States Professional Tennis Association, the highest and most prestigious credential accorded to teaching professionals. He has been an international seminar leader and speaker with over 45 years’ experience. He is recognized as the first tennis coach to have successfully blended Eastern and Western sport psychology. During his distinguished career, he has coached amateur, college, professional and Davis Cup players in more than ten countries. Oon specializes in the area of human potential and peak performance in the Zen tradition. He has written four books and edited a Coaches Manual, and authored numerous articles and features on tennis and coach education. Oon completed undergraduate studies at the University of Adelaide, Australia, and earned a Master’s degree at the University of Oregon, US. His doctorate is from the University of Queensland in Australia. His research work in sports has taken him to a number of countries, including Canada, New Zealand, China, India, Israel, Japan, S. Korea, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand and Singapore. In the 1990s, he served as Vice President of the International Soft Tennis Federation. He founded the Center for MindBody Tennis and currently lives in Redondo Beach, California.

"Conversations with a Zen Tennis master --- Courting the Mind: Minding the Court" ... Desmond Oon PhD

I met Desmond Oon at Adelaide University in 1960, where he had come to study Physical Education, after already being a teacher in Malaysia/Singapore, which included writing a text book. I was in my second year of teacher training, and we met in History lectures. I understood that he was a very good tennis player in the Pennant and District tennis competition in Adelaide and other parts of South Australia. My tennis was nowhere near that standard, but we did find a common interest in squash. Even though he was a much better player, Desmond and I played with gusto and enjoyment, and my game improved significantly.

He could always beat me with a high lob to the nock of the backhand court, where it would die, unplayable. His touch was soft and deft, and the placement always exact, and try as I might I could seldom return it. Needless to say, the more often he did it the more I fretted about it.

Had I known then what Desmond has put forward in his latest book "Conversation with a Zen Tennis Master" I could well have overcome my mental difficulties in mastering that stroke. However, when I played with other friends of far less skill than Desmond, if ever they tried a high lob into the left backcourt corner I could kill it every time! His "torture" definitely improved my stroke play, and for that I have to thank him.

Desmond's book is a fusion of Eastern wisdom with the physicality of the game of tennis, dominated as it has been by European competitiveness since its curious beginnings as Court Tennis around the reign of Henry VIII in England and Europe. The Eastern wisdom combines the enigmatic koans of Zen, with the aphorisms of the Tao, with its emphasis on balance and the unimpeded flow of energy.

Desmond clearly illustrates how the mental approach to the game of tennis in many ways can be more important than the physical mastery of the skills of tennis and the physical fitness required to play the game, especially at elite professional level. Many are the examples of players who on past performance, physical fitness, and ambition to win could be expected to be consistent winners, but inexplicably "choke" at critical times and lose with great frustration. Sports psychologists try to help such players overcome the mental obstacles to success by concentrating on motivation and focussed intention: this can help, but it can also heighten anxiety, especially in western oriented players.

This is where Desmond's approach helps players to transcend the anxiety issue by moving into a mindset which many westerners would call "spiritual", but in Eastern thinking is so very much a part of normal existence that it is taken for granted ---- finding the place of peace within the self.

So, how to you bring this to the tennis court I hear you say? .... probably with some degree of scepticism, if you have been raised in the West. This is what Desmond's book is about; bringing mind and body together in harmony on the court.

In Part 1 (Zen and Life) Desmond discusses how Zen and the Tao have affected his life, and what he has found, both as a player and as a coach, about the importance of the mind in playing the game of tennis. He does not speak from a theoretical or academic position but from the experience of a life spent playing the game he loves, and fusing into it how to make body and mind work together. Having grown up in Eastern culture from his Chinese heritage it was natural for him to make the connections with both the Tao and Zen to develop his mind game, and the mind game of those he has coached all over the world.

Part 2 (Problems and Solutions) is a very practical application of his insight into the mind game for players to use themselves. Chapter 5 --- Zen Tennis Toolkit brings it all together in direct plain language, spiced up with Desmond's wit for finding gentle humour and word play in what other coaching books approach with great earnestness. His tips, with what may appear to be whimsical contradictions, reflect how he has infused the Zen tradition of the koan (a sentence of apparent contradiction) into his own thinking and expression. You may not hear the sound of one hand clapping when you read Desmond's Tennis Toolkit, but you will certainly hear him chuckling in the background.

Part 3 (Conversation) is unusual for a coaching book on Tennis as it is a conversation between Desmond Oon and Dr. Damien Lafont, his good friend and editorial adviser. Through this conversation the reader is able to gain insight into how Desmond has arrived at what he now brings to the Tennis world as a contribution to both improving player performance and the game itself.
The inclusion of an Appendix (Zen Teaching tips) provides a whimsical yet thought provoking end to a book which I think you will find quite unlike any other you will read. Personally, it made me think of the aphorisms from Sun Tzu's "the Art of War", without the direness of what that book considered. Here are some snippets to entice you: ---

I am a Tennis Professional and rarely does one find a book that can connect the player to the heart of Tennis,which of course is the Mind-Body connection. This is such a book, written my a Master Coach and Teacher and life long student of Life and the game of Tennis, Dr. Desmond Oon.
I feel fortunate to know Dr. Oon and consider him the most leading edge teacher in the tennis world. I encourage many of my students to read this book but with a note of caution, it is filled with so much wisdom so it needs to be read slowly and then digested bite by bite. Thereafter it becomes playing Zen!

A beautiful guide to peak performance in tennis

I'm a typical American recreational tennis player seeking a way out from my inner demons during competition. How can I reduce my double faults during key points? How can I stay calm and confident when my partner and I are struggling to stay in the match? In this book, Dr. Oon has helped me see these challenges in a new light. And access many new tools to stay focused and centered in a peak performance state, in the midst of any situation or circumstance. WARNING TO COLLEGE STUDENTS

Great book! Sorry this is not a review for people who want to know about the contents but I just have a warning of all who wants to buy this product. STOP NOW DON'T CLICK THE BUY BUTTON. Go do yourself a favor and get the bound version of this book or even buy it from a friend. I bought this version thinking I could fit it inside a 2" binder no problem and use it through the school year. NOPE was I wrong... The pages are the same quality of any you would find in any math text book, flimsayyyyy.. And since it is hole punched it rips easily when you are trying to flip through the pages at lightning speed. So either you be very careful and slow while flipping through this book or you go do yourself a world of good by buying the bound version. Getting it bound by other stores and services will cost you about 50-150 ish dollars. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ money out the window. The price of the other one is 50 dollars more. PLEAse PLEASE PlEasE go buy that one and you won't have to deal with the troubles I had to go through.
