Action-packed spy thriller

Justin Hall and Carrie O'Connor are Canadian Intelligence agents, tasked with preventing an assassination plot in Libya by radical factions of the Islamic Alliance. There is more than enough action - not a day goes by when gunfire doesn't erupt. There is so much action, actually, that I felt as if I was reading the script from a Steven Seagal or Dolph Lundgren action movie. If you're a fan of that type of flick, then you'll probably enjoy reading this book.
There were quite a few typos which I found to be distracting in places, but I'm a writer, so I do tend to notice and be distracted by misspellings. The author would have done well to engage the services of a professional copy editor (or one with a keener eye!) Sentences like "A thin moustache line matched perfectly his hair color" and "The colonel's handshake was firm for a man of his built" are distracting to the reader - and easily prevented. Even worse was a scene involving a devout Muslim sipping "vintage Dom Perignon Rose," as well Justin having bacon for breakfast in Egypt. I'm not saying that neither one is possible - just that it would be unlikely, so I had the sense that the author was perhaps lacking knowledge about the religion of the characters that he was writing about. Some scenes stretched the credibility index a bit, as well, but to say more would be a spoiler.
Yes, there is a lot of action, fairly good character development and a somewhat coherent plot, so the book is worthy of a three-star rating. But given the negatives, it certainly doesn't rate as above average to my way of thinking.

"REVENGE IS A POWERFUL MOTIVATOR" (4.5 STARS)

First, while this is a stand-alone novel, I think you will enjoy it more if you read the previous novel, "ARTIC WARGAMES", as there are some things that happen in the first novel that are mentioned in this one and some characters are part of both novels. In addition, the reason for revenge comes from the first novel. If you have read the previous novel, you will not want to miss this one, it is his best yet.
Ethan Jones' latest thriller "Tripoli's Target" opens with a bang, several of them as terrorists explode several vehicles loaded with bombs throughout the hotel district in the Lebanese capital. We know from the beginning that the one truck that did not explode was part of the plan, but the Lebanese Secret Police do not discover this during their initial investigation, The action then continues in many of today's hot spots, Lybia, Sudan and Egypt with all the different sub-plots leading back to the bombing.
The author has greatly improved his writing skills since the first Justin Hall book. His writing is crisper, his characters are well developed and while some are not what they seem the author ties everything up by then end of the novel, leaving readers satisfied with the story. We come to realize that while these characters may be flawed, they have made and continue to make great personal sacrifices to make the world a safer place. I like that the author has made his protagonists Canadians, adding a fresh spin on characters that are usually part of the U.S. government. I've enjoyed this series and look forward to reading the next Justin Hall novel.

Speed racer and Barbie have an excellent adventure.

I really appreciate the clean-cut lives and absence of profanity and gratuitous sex but while I'm reading interesting twists and turns I can't help but feel the characters are more middle school superman comic than complex and serious involvement in real-life cloak and dagger international intrigue.
It is really nice to be able to refer Jones' work to my grandchildren because of its moral high ground but I wish the writing displayed a little more depth.
