Good book

This was the prescribed text book for history majors in my college in India. I am not sure how much editing and changes have been made in this version, but the book that we read was pretty well written, and provided a lucid account. Sometimes, it is important to read a basic book to get the big old picture. It is another matter that the interpretation of some of the events may have come under critiicism by later historians, who subscribed to various schools of thoughts, most notably a Marxist interpretation of Indian history.

The book provides a good chronological history of India.

A Very Readable Survey

I've been trying to read a survey of World History for years, but found most of the commonly available titles too dry and slow to get trough. McNeill did an admirable job of combining the history of eastern and western civilizations chronologically, and I can say that it's a great place to start if you're looking for an overview. Of course, it's light on many subjects as is necessary due to its size, and yes it's somewhat dated. However, I don't think you'll find a more readable survey.

McNeil is an old-fashioned narrative historian whose most famous book is Rise of the West. This book adopts a similar broad approach to world history. It makes an excellent gift for college students and young adult who want to lay a base for historical understanding.

A PROFESSOR OF HISTORY SUMMARIZES WORLD HISTORY

William Hardy McNeill (born 1917) is an American historian who has written other books such as The Rise of the West: A History of the Human Community; with a Retrospective Essay, Plagues and Peoples, etc. He wrote in the Preface to the 1979 edition of this book, "The success of my book 'The Rise of the West' made it plausible to believe that a shorter work would make my personal vision of the whole history of mankind more accessible to students and to general readers---a vision which... has the virtue of being cohesive and intelligible, something that can be grasped and remembered and reflected upon afterwards." (Pg. vi)

He states, "it is clear that mankind's achievements by 1700 B.C. were impressive... the pace of social change had assumed a dizzying rapidity... In short, civilized history, in all its complexity, was well launched." (Pg. 46-47) He notes, "The intellectual and religious evolution of ancient Middle Eastern society tended toward ethical and transcendental monotheism. But only the Jews were able consistently to carry the trend to a logical, unambiguous conclusion. Other peoples... could not throw away traditional polytheisms altogether." (Pg. 67)

He argues, "Such analysis of the antecedents of Christianity should not disguise the fact that the events so simply narrated in the Gospels and in Acts generated something new and enormously appealing... Around this tiny kernel of excited missionaries the vast fabric of historical Christianity gradually formed---a process as surprising and world-shaking as the similarly pervasive changes of behavior provoked by Buddha, Confucius, or any of the other great teachers of mankind." (Pg. 163)

He suggests, "Insofar as Asia has any community of cultural tradition uniting the Indian with the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Tibetan, Burmese, Cambodian, and Ceylonese peoples, it is due to the contagion of ancient Indian civilization, especially in its religious manifestation. The achievement of Hellenism was no greater." (Pg. 193) He contends, "The self-transformation and expansion of Islam was the most dramatic and conspicuous shift in world history that took place between A.D. 1000 and 1500." (Pg. 256) Later, he adds, "Islam was in a flourishing condition between 1500 and 1700. Not decay... but vigorous growth is the right phrase with which to describe Islamic society in this period... precisely during those years of success Islam failed to grapple with or even notice vital challenges which Europeans were beginning to present both on the economic and on the intellectual level." (Pg. 347)

Of the scientific outlook in the 17-th-18th centuries, he observes, "It requires... an act of the imagination to understand how extraordinary and exciting such discoveries were... Men who had been brought up to conceive the universe as ruled by a very active, personal God, who might intervene in any situation at any moment to work a miracle... found the Newtonian vision of the universe both frightening and liberating. God, it appeared, was a mathematician and had chosen to create the universe accordingly. In such a universe it seemed almost beneath God's dignity to work a miracle." (Pg. 371)

He concludes, "it is worth pondering that the civilized societies that have flourished and grown great in times past all accepted ethical systems that emphasized kindliness and love. All the major world religions taught such doctrines, and persons who ... tried to live in accordance with the precepts of their faith were probably more likely to leave descendants than those who rejected kindliness as a principle of conduct." (Pg. 540-541)

This is an excellent one-volume world history.

Let me just say, I had to buy 2 of these because my parents are divorced but still enjoy the same things. My dad works on a lot of heavy machinery and my mom travels a lot via car. This is a wonderful gift to give someone who spends a lot of time in a vehicle of any sort. The stories are engaging and well performed. My parents love the gift. It took extra time to deliver to my dad because he lives in the middle of nowhere. My mom received her gift on time because she lives near a major city.

Good read for startup founders

An excellent summary of things that an early stage startup founder needs to know about raising capital. Carlos has done a great job of pulling everything together in one place. Personally, I would have enjoyed a little bit more of Carlos' hard-hitting and opinionated style from his blog and public speaking.

The section on startup valuation is extremely helpful for founders trying to value their startup before asking for outside investment. Great stuff.

This is an excellent guide to fundraising. Every founder should read it.

It is clearly written, conversational, backed up with great stories and underpinned with sound philosophy - the short section "The Tao of Fundraising" alone is worth a donation to one of Carlos' recommended charities (the price of the book).

Read, act, learn, iterate.

Not exactly what I was looking for, but I can't fault them for that. They were looking for a different audience of people starting their own business and needing funds for that. It's not about charity type fundraising. But the info is pretty good. Some of it is very basic and obvious, but maybe that is necessary and/or appeals to some. As the book goes along, there are more details about how much money to raise (as much as you can) and many ideas about how to get what you need. It's not a book Id tell everyone about, but it's a good read and I think it would be helpful.

While Tesla was not able to successfully execute the devices and concepts he foresaw, his forward thinking in fields like wireless communication certainly proved prescient, and his futuristic devices and his later reputation for eccentricity helped create the “mad scientist” image that still remains a pop culture fixture. Tesla seemed to have come to grips with this aspect of his legacy late in life, noting, “The scientific man does not aim at an immediate result. He does not expect that his advanced ideas will be readily taken up. His work is like that of the planter — for the future. Tesla, the man with a plan.

Did you know that there were only a very few REAL Tesla coils ever built? It is true. The so called Tesla coils you see and read about are not Tesla coils at all. They are really Lodge coils that have nothing to do with Tesla at all. How did a little slip of using the words, Primary and secondary by Tesla himself to describe his devices cause so much confusion early on and still exists to this very day? See how modern science bypassed much of the great work of Tesla. So just what was Tesla really doing? What fantastic new type of energy did he discover. Why did the inventor of the ac power system we all use today abandon all further research of AC power and put all his effort into his new discovery? This book lays the ground work to answer that question.
A must read book to get the real story behind the man with a plan.

no illustrations?

just got it today. though i realized it has no illustrations. they reference to the figures, (as they should) but you have nothing as far as visual aid. kinda pointless. hint... hint ... and to top it all off, without much looking i found this lecture on the web for free and with the illustrations. like the other guy said .. its an addition to a library. other wise save your money and read it online.

This study attempts to analyse the text of Hebrews with a method of discourse analysis primarily based on a form of systemic functional linguistics developed for Hellenistic Greek, but it is also informed by other linguistic studies. It begins with a general survey of the literature that is either influential or representative of approaches to the structure of Hebrews. The survey is followed by an introduction to the terminology and definitions of discourse analysis, as well as the theory behind the methodology, and describes a procedure for analysing text.

Hebrews is treated as having three sections. The first section of Hebrews (1:1-4:16) demonstrates the organization of the units, the topic of the units, the prominent text, and the relationship of the first section with the rest of the discourse. The second section of Hebrews (4:11-10:25) is described in two parts (4:11-7:28 and 8:1-10:25) because of its length. There is an overlap between the first and second sections in 4:11-16 and between the second and third sections in 10:19-25. Both of these passages have a concluding function for the preceding co-text and a staging function for the following co-text, so that they look backwards and forwards. The third and final section in 10:19-13:25 contains the climax or discourse peak.

The study is concluded with a description of the coherence of the discourse and a presentation of a mental representation of the text.
