From 1978 to 1996, the late Gai Eaton gave a series of talks on BBC Radio about Islam and its role in contemporary society and this account features 86 of these talks—variously titled “Reflections,” “Words of Faith,” and “Pause for Thought.” Providing a beautifully clear and accessible introduction to Islam’s central tenets, principles, and practices, this book utilizes wisdom, humanity, and humor to teach those interested in a spiritual approach to life.

An absolute hidden treasure of great intellectual and spiritual depth
By Purple Strawberry
This book is an absolute hidden treasure!!! It was published posthumously in 2012-the author died in 2010. Gai Eaton is a British man who converted to Islam in the 1950s- this book consists of essays about the fundamentals of Islamic beliefs, practices, and values most of which are taken from interviews given to the BBC radio in the 1980s and 1990s.

The book starts from the basics of the five pillars of Islam and moves on to concepts such as prayer, dhikr, beauty, the environment and animal welfare, the ethics of modern technology and war, contemplation, the role of worship, social activism, and more. The reflections are deep, sensitive, thought-provoking, and you will want to read and reflect on them again and again.

This book is also suitable for a non-Muslim reader interested in a very deep and spiritual explanation of Islamic beliefs and practices. I also envision a halaqah/book club using this book for those who wish to discuss something with a lot of spiritual and intellectual meat to it.

Despite the fact that these talks were delivered decades ago, they are still immediately relevant to the issues of our time and often read as if they were written this year.

A captivating Listen
By Some guy on the web
I listened to this while commuting to and from work over the course of about a week. There were several "driveway moments" where I didn't want to stop listening. The action continuously moves forward, but the real meat of this [audio]book is in the conversations where seemingly regular people share profound insights into our society and history. It may seem funny to call it "inspirational" since it is very critical of the mainstream common perceptions of how things work--maybe "bracing" is a better term.

The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of a perfect 5 is that the author is not a professional narrator, so the different characters are sometimes hard to distinguish. Also, a minor structural quibble for naming two different characters with similar names: Josh and Jason, which is probably less a problem in print than in spoken/audio where my mind jumps ahead, and mixes up the characters.

Archaeology of Ancient Mexico and Central America: An EncyclopediaFrom Routledge

This is the first comprehensive, one-volume encyclopedia in English devoted to pre-Columbian archaeology of the Mesoamerican culture area.
In more than 500 articles by the major experts in the field, this work brings the most recent scholarship to an examination of regional environments and their cultural evolution. Entries range from the familiar and world-renowned archaeological discoveries of Maya and Aztec sites to more recent excavations such as the Sayil archaeological zone in the Yucatan and Teopantecuanitlan in Guerrero. A rich historical and cultural resource on one of the world's six cradles of civilization, this reference is ideal for students, scholars, and prospective travelers.

From Booklist
Reviewed with Medieval Archaeology.

These titles treat two major fields of inquiry within the discipline of archaeology.

Archaeology of Ancient Mexico and Central America covers the archaeology not only of the region known as Mesoamerica (Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama) but also of the cultural areas where pre-Columbian cultural traits were carried by migrants, from the U.S. Southwest to northern Ecuador. These cultural traits include farming techniques, food preparation, clothing, tools, weapons, games, architectural characteristics, writing, calendars, and religious beliefs. The editors present "a very broad introductory overview briefly summarizing what we know about the earliest human populations, the emergence and spread of food production and the rise of complex societies." The majority of the authors are from U.S. universities.

Each entry is signed and ends with a bibliography. Lengthy entries on topics such as Agriculture and domestication , Ball game , Ceram ics, Clothing , and Gender roles (a relatively recent interest that is gaining importance in Mesoamerican archaeology) are written for the layperson and college student and focus more on cultural anthropology than on technical aspects of archaeology. There are survey articles on groups such as the Aztecs and the Maya and entries for individual archaeological sites from the well-known, such as Cichen Itza, in Yucatan, Mexico, to hundreds of the more obscure. The names of the region and country follow each site in parentheses in the entry heading. Archaeological methods (e.g., Dating methods, Skeletal analysis) are discussed, as are a few important people like Manuel Gamio (1883-1960), one of Mexico's most important archaeologists, and the American George Vaillant (1901-1945).

Of special interest in this work are the tables and charts. For example, one table lists diseases before and after the European contact, and another lists museums with collections of pre-Columbian artifacts in the U.S and Central America.

Margaret Bunson's Encyclopedia of Ancient Mesoamerica (Facts On File, 1996) has a helpful guide to pronunciation, a useful chronological table, and five pages of architectural sites. However, it does not attempt the same breadth of coverage as the volume under review. Archaeology of Ancient Mexico and Central America is an essential purchase for collections devoted to the archaeology of Middle America and Mexico from the Pleistocene to European contact in the mid-sixteenth century.

Though it is playing an increasingly important role in contemporary archaeology, the archaeology of the Middle Ages is still a fragmented field. Crabtree, editor of Medi eval Archaeology, states in her preface, "One of the goals of this encyclopedia is to bring together in one volume the research of a diverse range of scholars who work on a wide variety of archaeological problems." Archaeologists trained in history, anthropology, archaeology, and classics contributed to this work, and only 17 percent are from the U.S. Research by Czech, Polish, Slovak, and Hungarian archaeologists, not available in English until now, is included. Medieval archaeology is defined as beginning with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century and ending with the dawn of the Modern Era, A.D. 1500. The focus is on "the Latin west stretching from Poland to Ireland and from southern Italy to northern Scandinavia. The Balkans and the Byzantine world are excluded.

Country and regional surveys for areas of Europe with major sites and research programs make up a large portion of the book. There are 17 country overviews, France receiving the most attention with 13 pages as opposed to 4 each for Germany and England. More than 80 sites are represented, with more than a quarter of them in England. At many of the sites, archaeology became important when urban redevelopment unearthed remarkable medieval archaeological finds. World War II bombing raids also exposed sites of interest to medieval archaeologists.

Other entries in the work treat topics such as Animal husbandry , Boatbuilding, Pilgrim souvenirs, and Water supply. There are entries related to archaeological techniques such as dendrochronology (a dating method) and crafts such as pottery and dyeing. The article Gender is especially interesting because the concept was not introduced until the 1980s in prehistoric archaeology and not until 10 years later in medieval archaeology.

There is no encyclopedia with which to compare this work, which is highly readable for nonspecialists. Very little technical language is used. Bibliographies accompany each entry, and a subject guide by country and an index facilitate access. The work is recommended for large public and academic libraries where study of the social and urban aspects of this historical period may be augmented by knowledge gleaned from these digs. REVWR

Excellent Resouce
By S. Taliaferro
This truly massive tome contains over 500 alphabetized entries that provide basic information about pre-columbian culture in mexico and central america. It also contains analysis of all known archaeology sites in the region. I have yet to look up a site that was not mentioned in this book. This is a must have for any student of archeaology interested in this area. The language can be a bit technical, but not to the extent of ruining the book even for the rank amateur. Due to the scope of this book the information is basic and the analysis is cursory but it is still very useful even to a seasoned archaeologist.

How many times have you been on vacation in central america or mexico and seen a road sign or map entry for ruin and wondered about its origin and significance or about the people who lived there? Wonder no more. I only hold a bachelors in archaeology so I am definitely not an expert but it seems that even if you actually work in the field this book is still invaluable as a quick reference guide with a comprehensive indexed listing of the thousands of sites in the region.

It's like a favorite teacher
By Joseph Judge
I am an independent corporate trainer who teaches people to write better at work. When my students ask me for good books to learn even more, this is the first book I mention. I tell them, "If you are a good writer and you want to be a very good writer, get this book."
I also tell them several other things about the book. First, it is not a book of lists like the excellent resource, The Elements of Style. Instead, it's a challenging textbook that is informative and compelling from beginning to end. Second, it teaches a novel way to keep readers interested in what you are writing. Basically it's narrative, or story telling, within each sentence. Third, it provides guidance on advanced topics such as emphasis, elegance, and ethics. Topics like these might seem esoteric or irrelevant, but the author makes them easy to understand and shows why they are useful, and he does it in a way that is fun to read.
This book is one of those few textbooks that you will remember the same way you remember that favorite teacher. Like that teacher, it brought you to a new level of knowledge, and it did it with humor and style.
I rated this book 5 stars because I think it is superior in all categories for a textbook: useful content, insightful author, clear exposition, skillful publishing, and reasonable price.

Best of the Best
By Amazon Customer
It is difficult to know where to begin. I am writing a brief review of this book to counter the negative reviews I read. I was stunned: I expected to read rave reviews of Professor Williams' book. Without wanting to offend anyone, they are for the most part so far off the mark I would think they were talking about another book.

One author mentioned Strunk and White's book as the ideal. As much as I loved this book when I was young, it seems slightly old-fashioned, even quaint now, and encourages an attention to rules that seems superficial. On the other hand, Williams' book takes advantage of the more systematic, deep approach to language, rhetoric and communication that was developed by the best linguists of the 20th century. There is a good reason that this book has had so many editions for such a long period of time (now in the 8th edition). It is because it is based on an insight that touches a deep truth about communicating in writing: that subjects and verbs, or characters and their actions as Williams helpfully calls them at times, form the basic elements of the English sentence. It is Williams' ability to draw out the implications of this simple truth that gives his book its genius. Emerson once said that rhythm is the deep structure of the universe (he said it better but I can't remember his words); I feel that Emerson would smile in agreement at Williams thesis: that it is an understanding of the significance of the basic character/action relationship between the subject and verb that gives a sentence its strength and, on a "higher" level, the same systole/diastole relationship between theme and discussion that gives a paragraph its strength.

I am by no means doing Professor Williams' book justice, and I would not have written this review if the others had not been so, well, wrong. His writing bad? On the contrary, good writing, as Williams points out in a useful addition to one of the later editions of his book on controlling longer sentences, does not mean Dick and Jane type sentences, and he does not allow himself to fall into Strunk and White's tendency to oversimplify in explaining his ideas. I am now directing an English language program at a major university in Thailand after teaching English at Indiana University for 20 years, and I was recently asked to teach a graduate course on writing. What book did I first reach for in looking for the most substantial, concrete, practical and useful lessons on writing so that my students would not be exposed to the usual platitudes on omitting needless words and relying on your taste to be your guide? Professor Williams' book of course. It is the best of the best and will reward you endlessly as you apply his basic insights in your own writing.

Great resource for writers and editors
By Paralogue
I wish I had this book five years ago when I was starting out as a copy editor at my college newspaper. In this abridged version of the text, Williams provides guidelines and techniques as to how to revise problematic sentences. He dissects the problems in a clear fashion and leads the reader through the process of editing through the problems. It takes only a few hours to read, but sessions of careful re-reading will prove rewarding for your writing and editing skills.

Although the focus is on nonfiction writing, insofar as I can tell, the advice and methods Williams presents can be applied beyond nonfiction. Williams does use a lot of grammar terminology and does diagram some sentences, almost a lost skill nowadays, but he explains himself clearly, concisely, and with examples.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who seeks to improve their writing and editing skills, especially at the college level. Added bonus: this is more inexpensive compared to the unabridged version of the book.

I am giving the book 1 star due to the ...
By T. D. Telford II
Update: The code is now available at the apress site, so giving the book 4 stars.

I am giving the book 1 star due to the following:
1. The back cover says "source code online". It is not available on the Apress or Springer sites.
2. I called the support number. After 5 minutes of waiting (with messages that "your call is important to us") I receive a message "Goodby" and was disconnected. I tried a second time with the same results.

The printed book itself gets at least 4 stars, but without the source code the value is very diminished and I am put off the by support experience.

Book sponsored by horizontal lines
By Maciej Pilichowski
At first glance the format of the book looks as usual as it can be, but when you take the book in your hand, you notice something is off. I was curious and I put this book against the others -- yep, the book is taller and narrower than "regular" book. I don't know why such change, but it makes reading harder because the inner margins are smaller, and around first 100 pages and last 100 pages you have to read in L position (of the book) -- i.e. you cannot put it flat (unless you don't mind cracking the binding).

While I am at technical issues -- there is no syntax highlighting of the code (only the output is put in italics), and publisher is a huge fan of horizontal lines -- small snippet, comment, output, you name it, almost every page is slashed by horizontal lines. I didn't even realize how tiresome it is until I opened the next book I wanted to read (Real World OCaml: Functional programming for the masses by O'Reilly), it is from another publisher, it does not use any lines and the first thought that comes to mind is -- peace. My eyes can finally rest.

Minor complain is quality of the typesetting, decades after inventing LaTeX, we still have to have text, where a word followed with colon looks like a squashed fly (example p.22). Oh, well... who cares about quality?

Ok, the content -- it is pretty thorough and complete. Please note the level of this book though, it is focused on already experienced devs ("the gloves are off" -- just as an example, pipe operator "|>" is used from the beginning, but explained on p.46). The distinction between the language features and libraries (or "F# applied") is clear, there is no jumping back and forth. I really wish more of the language, and less of the libraries. In my experience, libraries come and go, but the language stays. This is my personal bias (and bad luck) that the feature I was hoping to read the most takes just a few pages -- measure units. Here and in few other places authors decided to keep the text short and advise the reader to read more on the web. I really hate that notion of buying a book just to read I can use web browser to read more.

There are other interesting topics covered like active patterns, quotations, reactive programming, or tail recursion optimization. But again, I feel the coverage of those topics are too short (while for example Eto Forms take entire chapter, 50 pages), it is a wrong balance in my opinion.

I cannot even explain why I feel this way, but I simply feel it -- before reading "Expert F# 4.0" I finished reading Groovy in Action. I could say the latter is a journey guided by passionate people, this book on the other hand is written like it was a duty. There is no question about the knowledge, or anything like that, but there is no this spark of charm. Pity.

Amazon says 3 out of 5 is "OK", and I think it is fair for this book. It is a reliable source of information, no doubt, but "I like it" (4 of 5), no, especially when you compare it to other books. On the other hand -- would I buy it again if I have my money back, yes -- without any regret of spending money, but also without any real choice, because there is no competition when it comes to F# 4.0 books. We will see if there will be some worthy contender for F# 5.0...

Absolutely the best book out there.
By Rohit Sharma
Absolutely love the book and highly recommend it. Though I know haskell and bit of clojure, I think even intermediate OO/fn devs would find the book as a good start to F# - the book is not for experts, but it will get you there. I find the book very easy to read, starts of with very simple examples right from the beginning, the examples are short and succinct (as F# is), but enough to give you a taste of core fundamentals one after the other. Do not read and skim through the book, but exercise the examples yourself and experiment as you go along.

I'd also recommend Scott's excellent guide [...] and Real World Functional Programming book by Tomas and John. Mark Seeman has excellent video on Pluralsight

The Chicago Manual of Style, by University of Chicago Press Staff

In the 1890s, a proofreader at the University of Chicago Press prepared a single sheet of typographic fundamentals intended as a guide for the University community. That sheet grew into a pamphlet, and the pamphlet grew into a book--the first edition of the Manual of Style, published in 1906. Now in its fifteenth edition, The Chicago Manual of Style--the essential reference for authors, editors, proofreaders, indexers, copywriters, designers, and publishers in any field--is more comprehensive and easier to use than ever before.

Those who work with words know how dramatically publishing has changed in the past decade, with technology now informing and influencing every stage of the writing and publishing process. In creating the fifteenth edition of the Manual, Chicago's renowned editorial staff drew on direct experience of these changes, as well as on the recommendations of the Manual's first advisory board, composed of a distinguished group of scholars, authors, and professionals from a wide range of publishing and business environments.

Every aspect of coverage has been examined and brought up to date--from publishing formats to editorial style and method, from documentation of electronic sources to book design and production, and everything in between. In addition to books, the Manual now also treats journals and electronic publications. All chapters are written for the electronic age, with advice on how to prepare and edit manuscripts online, handle copyright and permissions issues raised by technology, use new methods of preparing mathematical copy, and cite electronic and online sources.

A new chapter covers American English grammar and usage, outlining the grammatical structure of English, showing how to put words and phrases together to achieve clarity, and identifying common errors. The two chapters on documentation have been reorganized and updated: the first now describes the two main systems preferred by Chicago, and the second discusses specific elements and subject matter, with examples of both systems. Coverage of design and manufacturing has been streamlined to reflect what writers and editors need to know about current procedures. And, to make it easier to search for information, each numbered paragraph throughout the Manual is now introduced by a descriptive heading.

Clear, concise, and replete with commonsense advice, The Chicago Manual of Style, fifteenth edition, offers the wisdom of a hundred years of editorial practice while including a wealth of new topics and updated perspectives. For anyone who works with words, whether on a page or computer screen, this continues to be the one reference book you simply must have.

What's new in the Fifteenth Edition:

* Updated material throughout to reflect current style, technology, and professional practice

* Scope expanded to include journals and electronic publications

* Comprehensive new chapter on American English grammar and usage by Bryan A. Garner (author of A Dictionary of Modern American Usage)

* Updated and rewritten chapter on preparing mathematical copy

* Reorganized and updated chapters on documentation, including guidance on citing electronic sources

* Streamlined coverage of current design and production processes, with a glossary of key terms

* Descriptive headings on all numbered paragraphs for ease of reference

* New diagrams of the editing and production processes for both books and journals, keyed to chapter discussions

* New, expanded Web site with special tools and features for Manual users. Sign up at www.chicagomanualofstyle.org for information and special discounts on future electronic Manual of Style products.

Countless publishing professionals have learned the details of their business from this classic guide for publishers, editors and writers. It's updated every 10 years or so, and the 15th edition is the most extensive revision in decades. The Internet's influence is pervasive, with substantial sections on preparing manuscripts for electronic publishing, editing for online publications and citing electronic sources. The "Rights and Permissions" chapter is by attorney William S. Strong (The trace the publication process for books and journals, both print and electronic, from manuscript development to distribution and marketing. For the first time, the manual includes a chapter on grammar and usage, by Bryan A. Garner (A Dictionary of Modern Usage). Gone is the 13-page table showing when to hyphenate compound words of all sorts, but it's replaced by a six-plus-page list and a narrative overview, which will be simpler for the overworked manuscript editor ("copyeditor" has vanished, and the index relegates "copyediting" to a cross-reference to manuscript editing) to use. Traditionalists may be bothered by the new edition's preference for ZIP Code state abbreviations and dropping periods from such abbreviations as Ph.D. and even U.S. Some things do remain the same. The style guide still endorses the serial comma (which PW does not) and numerals are still spelled out from one through one hundred and at the beginning of a sentence. Those in the publishing industry will need this edition, both for what's new and for what they will want to argue about.

From Booklist
The Chicago Manual of Style maintains its vitality by adapting to its ever-changing environment. None of the changes from one edition to the next are capricious; that which remains vital carries over, and that which must change, changes.

From the 1906 first edition's limited focus as "a compilation of typographical rules" for books, it has evolved to provide guidance to authors and editors working in other forms and media such as journals, newsletters, Web sites, and even, with the fifteenth edition, American Sign Language. The editors now "assume throughout that most writers and editors, whether preparing print or nonprint works, use computer software." That assumption is most visible in the chapter dealing with presentation in type of mathematical expressions and formulas. Software has collapsed the division of labor between author and typesetter, giving the author the power to fulfill both roles simultaneously. Mathematicians have faced that special challenge; all scholars have been vexed by uncertainty about citing electronic resources.

Various specialized manuals from other publishers have attempted to codify practices for citing electronic publications, but none has enjoyed the authority Chicago has earned over nearly a century. The fifteenth offers deeper guidance for citing electronic books, articles in e-journals, electronic editions of older works, and online newspapers and magazines. The clear, practical, and easily applied rules for citing these sources recognize the problem an author must solve when a URL is subject to change; they also offer advice on matters such as when to provide the date a cited e-work was accessed. U.S. copyright law, driven by the same technologies the fifteenth edition addresses, has also experienced significant changes. An expanded section on copyright offers clear albeit not exhaustive coverage of the current complexities of copyright. All authors would do well to study this primer.

Chicago's mantra throughout is consistency in support of clarity. Helping authors and editors achieve consistency in practice when creating or editing a manuscript and presenting it to readers is Chicago's raison d'etre. The prescriptive tone of some entries serves consistency, but usage is determined by users of the language. Chicago acknowledges variants in practice, often noting that an author may use a variant even though its entry first describes preferred practice. Bowing to popular influence, the editors concede that they "no longer urge deletion of the d in 2nd or the r in 3rd" and they "now recommend the month-day-year form of dates" prevalent in the U.S. The editors also have the wisdom and the experience to uphold rules that, if ignored, can create confusion in readers' minds. All of the rules and recommendations are easily accessible through the thorough index, a hallmark of every recent edition.

New to the fifteenth is a lively chapter on grammar and usage contributed by Bryan A. Garner, author of Garner's Modern American Usage (2d ed., Oxford, 2003; formerly A Dictionary of Modern American Usage). Its first part reviews basic rules of English grammar, and the second offers succinct explanations of words easily misused (decimate, precondition) or confused (e.g., healthy and healthful; purposely and purposefully). Added features discuss bias-free language and prepositional idioms.

Evolution is never a lockstep uniform process. Although the heart of Chicago embraces changes wrought by digital publishing, its concluding bibliography lags. Only the print editions of general-purpose encyclopedias and several English-language dictionaries are noted. Even though the entry for the Oxford English Dictionary indicates its availability on CD-ROM, it neglects to mention its online incarnation. But one must not miss the forest for these few trees. As it has done again and again, Chicago offers sensible, clearly articulated, and defensible advice to authors and editors who want to do their best to present an author's text to readers. Every library that serves authors, especially those producing scholarly works, simply must have the current edition of chicago. RBB

From the Inside Flap

CHICAGOS 15thA BIG DISAPPOINTMENT
By LeRoy Johnson
Because of the size of the print used in the 15th edition, I could not read the text so I rushed downtown (14 miles one way) and bought a stronger pair of reading spectacles. With the new glasses, I noted strange looking numbers announcing each paragraph. Paragraphs 1.33 and 3.11 looked as though they were set by an inebriated typesetter. The "one" numerals in both paragraphs appeared to be superscripted.
My curiosity led me to the colophon where I learned the manual is set with Scala and Scala Sans fonts. I used my favorite search engine and discovered these fonts were "invented" in 1999. I also discovered numerals 1, 2, and 0 are diminutive and the remainder are mega size and numerals 6 and 8 are superscripted. Mystery solved: The Chicago Press did not have an inebriated type setter.
Even with my more powerful spectacles, I still had trouble reading the text. I used my microscope and measured the capital letters in the 14th edition; they are 0.2 millimeters taller than the Scala capitals. This seems trivial, but it is not (particularly for older writers and editors). More bothersome than the small type size is the bluish type found in chapter 5. At first I thought there were sections of the text missing. All the text within the curly brackets is printed with barely discernable blue ink, which is virtually invisible under certain artificial light conditions. On page 148, note 5, we are told the curly brackets were used to save space. I don't have the Scala on my Mac but I tested several commonly used fonts and discovered words and phrases enclosed in square brackets use less space!
On the plus side Chicago has seen the light and dumped a couple of their old, long-standing edicts that made little or no sense. They now recommend the month-day-year method of recording dates (p. xii & 6.46); I was elated to find this change. I reasoned some of the curmudgeons who had ruled Chicago for eons retired and vanished from the scene-I was wrong. In paragraphs 17.186 and 17.225, Chicago recommends using the day-month-year system when there is a string of dates because it supposedly eliminates or reduces clutter. I was wrong again; there are still curmudgeons on the staff who won't totally abandon the military day-month-year rule.
I then went to the inclusive numbers paragraphs and was momentarily delighted to read "a foolproof system is to give the full form of numbers everywhere" (9.65). Then I looked at the preceding paragraph and was disheartened to learn Chicago does not like the foolproof system. Instead of 101-108 (the foolproof method) they want us to use 101-8 (presumably there are lots of fools who need placating).
Chapters 16 and 17 go on ad nauseam explaining how identical citation entries are handled differently in notes, bibliographies, or in reference lists (16.8-16.120 and 17.3-17.264). My wife and I have chaired several Death Valley historical conferences; she edits and prepares the camera ready text for the proceedings. Our instruction to the authors is simple: "We see no need to use different styles of literature citations in references and notes. Therefore, use the same literature citation format in your notes as used in references," which is the author-date system.
Scrutinizing the literature citation examples in the15th edition (e.g., 17.25-17.179), it is difficult to discern some of the subtle differences demanded by Chicago. The only way I could find them was to use a magnifying glass along with my more powerful reading glasses. Life, for authors, would be much simpler if Chicago would eliminate the frustrating nuances of the three systems and adopt the author-date system for notes, bibliographies, and literature citations.
In Chicago's discussion as to when to use the word "percent" or the "%" symbol we are told "in humanistic copy the word percent is used ... [but, presumably, for we non-humanistic scientists] the symbol % is more appropriate" (9.19). As long as I am on trivia, here's another one: Paragraph 17.169 lays down the rules for making the momentous decision as to when you leave a space following a colon. There's a rule for the space and one against the space. Wouldn't it be easier to simply say: A space always follows a colon or no space following the colon if followed by a number. Unquestionably this would be simpler but it wouldn't provide nits for an editor to pick.
Chicago now disallows op. cit. (opere citato: in the work previously cited) (16.50). The careless use of this helpful term is ubiquitous in the historical books I read. I've wasted many hours canvassing the previous notes in a book frantically attempting to track down, for example, "Wheat, op. cit. p. 47." When something is broken, fix it. The op. cit. "break" is easy to repair and here is how: Wheat, op. cit. [n. 3] p. 47. This immediately refers you back to the original note 3 where Wheat was first cited and tells you the author is now citing something on page 47 from Wheat's work.
The 14th edition, with its legible text has 921 pages and the barely readable 15th edition has 966 pages. Chicago added an excellent Grammar and Usage chapter, which consumed 92 pages. This chapter is a valuable addition to the tome.
It is now obvious Chicago will have to dump some sections if a readable 16th edition ever rolls off the press. Chicago could, as they did in the 15th edition, reduce the size of the font (heaven forbid!). If they do this, they'll have to supply a magnifying glass with each book.
A far better suggestion would be to whack away at the superfluous text with Occam's Razor and eliminate their insistence on having different standards for notes, references, and bibliographies. If they adopted the author-date system, widely used in the scientific community, the razor could trim a couple hundred pages of trivia. They then could go back to a readable font size.

Everything you need is right here.
By Mike Smith
This is to "The Elements of Style" what a good encyclopedia is to a good dictionary. "The Elements of Style" will tell you the basics of what you need to know, but "The Chicago Manual of Style" will tell you everything else.
Everything else.
Every nagging question you've ever had about writing and grammar and punctuation is in here.
The proper rules for ellipsis marks?
Check.
The complete rules for making and organizing an index?
Check.
Extensive elaborations on the proper use of quotation marks, the active voice, and Roman numerals?
Check, check, check!
It's all here. It's all here, it's clearly written, and it's as complete as can be. It also has a good index for easier access to all its information.
If the book has any faults, it's that it employs a really baffling system of arranging its material, using a system of numbers and decimal points that's never really explained, and that even professional editors have puzzled over.
If you're a writer though, and if you want your work to look and read as professional as clear and as possible, you really ought to own and study and learn from this book. It can only help you.

Oh, I Hate This Book, But --
By A.Trendl HungarianBookstore.com
I hate this book. Can I say it clearer? Following its detailed formatting for bibliographies is challenging, but I need it. I don't like that either. What can I say? It is making me a better writer, and assisting me in my ability to persuade publications to print my work. It helps me earn money.

Like the Associated Press book, it is an absolute requirement for any writer serious about presenting his work professionally and with a consistent style.

Keep both Chicago and the AP on your desk if you write grants, white papers, marketing communications, press releases, feature articles. You get the idea. The only kind of professional business writer who may not need "The Chicago Manual of Style" might be a pure ad copywriter. The rest of us, even those us who are hip and modern, and work largely online, will not escape from it.

More academic publications require Chicago. More journalistic publications require AP. See? You need them both. In fact, you'll need several other style manuals if you make a living (or intend to) as a writer and/or editor. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. (Look! I used Chicago already. Notice the use of commas in a series.)

This is not a book I can say, "It is difficult to use. Buy its competitor." There is only one "Chicago Manual of Style." You will learn the structure quickly enough.

Buy this book. Hate it, but in an appreciated way.

I fully recommend this book.
