When designer Papanek lays down precepts for design in the 21st century or questions a professional code of ethics, he is clearly addressing other designers and architects. But when he explains Le Corbusier's "visual accoustics" or the Wiener Werstatte, it seems safe to assume he envisions a broader audience of consumers who, if made aware of the possibilities, can demand better, more responsible design. As in his Design for the Real World, Papanek derides conspicuous consumption and rapid obsolescence. Using examples drawn from various cultures and other research to bolster his case, he urges designers and architects to incorporate ethics (Does an object help the needy? Does it use scarce resources?) and humanity (Do the light, acoustics and scale foster a sense of well-being?). While Papanek is all for fun in design, he dismisses such senseless elements as add-ons that don't really improve performance (the annoying car voice intoning "your door is ajar") or miniaturization that ignores the limits of the human body. He urges consumers to break the cycle of consumption and be aware of the difference between eye-catching marketing and good design. The Green Imperative itself lacks something in design: it covers so much that the argument is occasionally diffused. Still, Papanek is committed to his subject and becomes almost poetic when discussing Inuit and Balinese design or the necessity of integrating the ephemeral and the permanent. 152 illustrations; 46 in color.

In his groundbreaking work, Design for the Real World (1971) (still in print and available in 23 languages), Papanek introduced the idea of an ethics of design. Now, 25 environmentally irresponsible years later, he reiterates his plea for ecologically sound design of everything from food packaging to buildings. Designers and architects possess a remarkable ability to blend the demands of aesthetics with those of technology; why not add to that the pursuit of innovative ideas for avoiding pollution and other forms of environmental degradation. And the burden doesn't rest solely on designers: we should all demand products and buildings that are created in harmony with nature. Papanek offers many instructive ways of assessing the environmental impact of various materials and manufacturing processes. He also, in perhaps the book's most intriguing section, discusses how one "senses" a building and how vernacular architecture maintains its close connection to the land it occupies. Much as Papanek expresses concern over environmental problems, he does have hope. We are a species, after all, that seeks challenges and loves novelty. Let's harness those urges and clean up our act. Eye-candy. Needed more aggressive editing

The Green Imperative is a beautiful book. Many pictures. Very high quality paper.
I found it difficult to read as a serious book as there are places where politics supercede accuracy. "within seven and a half years the entire energy needs of the world could be supplied by...solar panels...Super-conducting cables *would* carry the power to areas with less sunlight." emphasis mine, page 43 "Finnish design... 22mm rifle.." .22 caliber (inch), perhaps? page 52
Also, a blithe treatment of the issue of economics "the timber industry generally refuses to engage in selective harvesting from multi-species mature forests..." page 36
This book could have brought Greens and industry closer together. Rather, it gives Greens more "evidence" of an anti-environmental conspiracy.

As a design student, I found this to be among the best design titles I have read to date. The book is inspiring, offering practical suggestions for adding sustainable principles to any design project. It is also eye-opening, exposing readers to successful design from a myriad of cultures. Papanak also explores the benefits of design education for everyone, and provides examples of successful design for every point he brings up. Every page seems to inspire a new design idea. This title is a must for every designer and design student.

The Fires of Paradise

Of all of the Bragg saga novels that Brenda Joyce has written, Fires of Paradise is the most heartstopping, erotic and sensual. It combines romance, passion and history with flair. As a historian, I was enthralled not only by the settings of the story, but by the accuracy with which Joyce portrayed the Spanish-American War, along with the troubles of Cuba. The characters of Shoz Cooper and Lucy Bragg are two of the most well-rounded of characters Joyce has thus introduced. Their love story is one of pure enjoyment to read over and over. It is the story of the spoiled little rich girl who falls in love with the mysterios stranger with a dubious past. Of course, Shoz was not good enough for Lucy, according to her family. It amazes me that a number of my friends and colleagues who read romances have not enjoyed perusing the works of this extremely talented writer.

Shoz and Lucy were attracted to each other right away. They are so perfect for each other. Lucy was brave, going after what she wanted and the consequences be damned. She follows Shoz from the borders of Mexico to the hot fires of Death Valley, to the turbulence of war in Cuba, to find Paradise in Texas. She throws away all her sophisticated life in New York just for the love of a outlaw with no future. Shoz was the brave half-breed that looked mean, vicious, and dangerous on the outside, but was a kind, soft heart real hero inside that helped liberty for the people. Although he knew Lucy, the rich princess was out of his reach, but he would walk the fires of paradise for her when he risk his life to save the only woman who broke through his tough mean heart and teach him the meaning of love. This one is definitely one of the hottest Bragg series emotionally and physically that will leave your pages going up in flames.

Action-packed spy thriller

Justin Hall and Carrie O'Connor are Canadian Intelligence agents, tasked with preventing an assassination plot in Libya by radical factions of the Islamic Alliance. There is more than enough action - not a day goes by when gunfire doesn't erupt. There is so much action, actually, that I felt as if I was reading the script from a Steven Seagal or Dolph Lundgren action movie. If you're a fan of that type of flick, then you'll probably enjoy reading this book.

There were quite a few typos which I found to be distracting in places, but I'm a writer, so I do tend to notice and be distracted by misspellings. The author would have done well to engage the services of a professional copy editor (or one with a keener eye!) Sentences like "A thin moustache line matched perfectly his hair color" and "The colonel's handshake was firm for a man of his built" are distracting to the reader - and easily prevented. Even worse was a scene involving a devout Muslim sipping "vintage Dom Perignon Rose," as well Justin having bacon for breakfast in Egypt. I'm not saying that neither one is possible - just that it would be unlikely, so I had the sense that the author was perhaps lacking knowledge about the religion of the characters that he was writing about. Some scenes stretched the credibility index a bit, as well, but to say more would be a spoiler.

Yes, there is a lot of action, fairly good character development and a somewhat coherent plot, so the book is worthy of a three-star rating. But given the negatives, it certainly doesn't rate as above average to my way of thinking.

"REVENGE IS A POWERFUL MOTIVATOR" (4.5 STARS)

First, while this is a stand-alone novel, I think you will enjoy it more if you read the previous novel, "ARTIC WARGAMES", as there are some things that happen in the first novel that are mentioned in this one and some characters are part of both novels. In addition, the reason for revenge comes from the first novel. If you have read the previous novel, you will not want to miss this one, it is his best yet.

Ethan Jones' latest thriller "Tripoli's Target" opens with a bang, several of them as terrorists explode several vehicles loaded with bombs throughout the hotel district in the Lebanese capital. We know from the beginning that the one truck that did not explode was part of the plan, but the Lebanese Secret Police do not discover this during their initial investigation, The action then continues in many of today's hot spots, Lybia, Sudan and Egypt with all the different sub-plots leading back to the bombing.

The author has greatly improved his writing skills since the first Justin Hall book. His writing is crisper, his characters are well developed and while some are not what they seem the author ties everything up by then end of the novel, leaving readers satisfied with the story. We come to realize that while these characters may be flawed, they have made and continue to make great personal sacrifices to make the world a safer place. I like that the author has made his protagonists Canadians, adding a fresh spin on characters that are usually part of the U.S. government. I've enjoyed this series and look forward to reading the next Justin Hall novel.

Speed racer and Barbie have an excellent adventure.

I really appreciate the clean-cut lives and absence of profanity and gratuitous sex but while I'm reading interesting twists and turns I can't help but feel the characters are more middle school superman comic than complex and serious involvement in real-life cloak and dagger international intrigue.

It is really nice to be able to refer Jones' work to my grandchildren because of its moral high ground but I wish the writing displayed a little more depth.

About the Author

SHIGENOBU KOBAYASHI graduated from Hiroshima College of Technology and received his master's degree from Waseda University for his work in the field of color psychology. In 1966, he founded the Nippon Color & Design Research Institute (NCD) and has since become a leader in the field of color psychology. Kobayashi is the author of over 30 books on color in the Japanese language, with total sales in excess of 400,000 copies. Colorist is his third English-language publication, following A Book of Colors (1967) and Color Image Scale (1991). Kobayashi is also an active participant of the International Color Association (AIC) and a lecturer at the graduate school of the Musashi Institute of Technology.

THE NIPPON COLOR & DESIGN RESEARCH INSTUTUTE (NCD) acts as a color and design consultant firm to over 300 major Japanese corporations in fields as diverse as automobiles, home appliances, cosmetics, food, department stores, and home construction. Excellent

This is an excellent book for appreciating color in terms of narrowing down your preferences and of course your style, the grid is very well thought out and expressed in color and in words. It teaches how a colorist develops an effect by the choosing color. The only downside is that I wish the book was bigger format. I have all three of the author's books translated into English. There are many more in Japanese that I would enjoy reading in English.

Not quite what I expected

This is a designers reference and self help book. It was referred to me by one of my professors.

From what I can see, the book has an interesting concept to try and get a designer to "see".

Cons:
This is a small book and therefore the print and images within it are very small. It isn't a book that you would sit down to read cover to cover and even for reference, you had better get out the magnifying glass.

Successful Color Choices R Us

Color choices may not be easy but they are doable if you follow the process outlined in this book.
'Colorist' is a fascinating insight into how and why color affects us and our impressions of the world. It abounds with images from nature, architecture, art and products.
It is not a simple book to immediately apply but it offers a workable process which relies on an excellent understanding of what is required from the color scheme being prepared. By applying the book's principles it is possible to develop both appropriate color schemes and the rationale behind why these are the right color choices!
I felt that some of the language suffered from being translated from Japanese but on the whole the book is well written and follows a logical progression identifying the various elements that need to go into making successful color choices.
If color is an important element of your life, whether at home or work, this book will help you identify your color prejudices and the right color combinations for a particular project. Overall a good buy!
