Morris is particularly good at tracing the neurological and social origins of religion

This is a commendably deep probe of religion, from the earliest days of people sitting around the cave fire in furs, up to the “modern” age when many of the old superstitions have survived intact. Morris is particularly good at tracing the neurological and social origins of religion. He got me thinking hard about where it comes from and the reasons it survives.

Not content with mere analysis, Morris shows us the rationalist alternative and how it works in the progressive nations of Northern Europe. Why is Australia such a laggard? How can the country get rid of the habitual kow-towing to religious institutions and a non-secular education system? This writer has convincing answers, plus some great action ideas.

this book should be the sylabus text book for any one studying religion and compulsory for everyone else .

I found it challenging to read the first time and could only cope with about 20 pages at a time . mainly because I got so angry and depressed about australia’s future and australians in general . and also there is so much to think about , you need a break to absorb and think about what you have just read .

in reading the book a 3rd time I now have time to follow the extensive references and source material . the references are very easy to find and there are also internet links on the website [...]

it is an engrossing , easy to read book that also doubles as a great reference book .

About the Author
Ulric J. (Joe) Gelinas, Jr., PhD, is Professor Emeritus at Bentley University, Waltham, Massachusetts. For PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dr. Gelinas developed and taught training programs for business processes, internal control, and IT audit. He was Senior Consultant for MIS Training Institute teaching courses in the IT Audit curriculum and taught in the University of Maastricht's International Executive Master of Finance and Control Program. Professor Gelinas also has taught at the University of Tennessee and at Vesalius College, Vrije Universtiteit Brussel, in Brussels, Belgium. Professor Gelinas has published articles on interorganizational collaboration and coordination infrastructures, accounting information systems, use of technology in business education, technical communications, and information privacy. These articles have appeared in academic and practitioner journals, including the Journal of Information Systems, Issues in Accounting Education, IS Audit & Control Journal, Government Information Quarterly, Journal of Information Technology, International Journal of Technology Management, International Journal of IT Standards and Standardization Research, Journal of Information Systems Education, Technical Communications Quarterly, and IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication. In 2003, Professor Gelinas received the Innovation in Auditing and Assurance Education Award from the American Accounting Association. He has made presentations and conducted workshops at the International Conference of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA) and at ISACA's Computer Audit, Control, and Security (CACS) conferences as well as for other professional groups. Professor Gelinas was a member of the U.S. expert panel that reviewed Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT) and has conducted COBIT workshops throughout the world.

Richard (Rick) Dull, PhD, CPA/CFF, CISA, CFE, is an accounting professor at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Professor Dull also has taught at Clemson University, Indiana University-Indianapolis, and High Point University. His professional experience includes application programming with a manufacturing firm as well as audit and information systems consulting experience with a national CPA firm. His work on a project involving cross-departmental integration of enterprise systems earned him a Microsoft Pinnacle Award for Excellence in Education as well as a Clemson University Board of Trustees Award for Faculty Excellence. Professor Dull has been published in academic and practitioner journals, including Journal of Information Systems, International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting, Accounting Education: An International Journal, Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Accountancy, CPA Journal, and Personal Financial Planning. Professor Dull is a member of the American Accounting Association, American Institute of CPAs, Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, AIS Educator Association, and ISACA. His professional activities have included serving on the AICPA's Assurance Services Executive Committee and serving as President of the American Accounting Association's Artificial Intelligence/Emerging Technologies Section. He recently served as a member of the AICPA's BEC Subcommittee and currently serves as an editor for Journal of Information Systems, an associate editor for Accounting Education: An International Journal, and an editorial advisor for the Journal of Accountancy.

Patrick Wheeler, PhD, CPA, CITP, is Associate Professor at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. He teaches accounting information systems at the graduate and undergraduate levels and has extensive training in databases and enterprise resource planning systems (SAP and Oracle Financials). Professor Wheeler is a CPA with the Louisiana Society of CPAs and a Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) with the American Institute of CPAs. His research focuses on behavioral issues in information systems, especially in regard to the impact of computerized decision aids on business decision making. His articles, published worldwide in numerous academic journals and magazines, can be found in The Accounting Review, Journal of Information Systems, Behavioral Research in Accounting, Advances in Accounting Behavioral Research, International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, International Journal of Disclosure and Governance, Studies in Managerial and Financial Accounting, Issues in Accounting Education, and Review of Accounting Information Systems. He received the 2007 Outstanding Research Paper Award and the 2007 Finalist Research Paper Award from the Information Systems (IS) section of the American Accounting Association (AAA). He won the Outstanding IS Dissertation Award at the 2001 AAA Annual Meeting and currently serves on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Information Systems and International Journal of Accounting Information Systems. He received the 2006 Outstanding Service Award from the AAA IS Section. Professor Wheeler is active in the AAA at both the national and regional levels.

Easy read. Old content.

The material is seriously dated. I work in accounting day in day out and am pursuing the degree to further that and while the book is easy, only the high level content is of any value. The systems information and even process flow discussions are directed and processes and environments that were common 15 years ago. Maybe still more relevant with smaller businesses since I don't deal with those on a day in day out basis.

About the Author
Tomek Lehnert, Author of Rogues in Robes Tomek Lehnert was born on August 15, 1956 in Gdansk, Poland. He studied Civil Engineering at the Polytechnics of Gdansk and English literature at the University of Poznan, Poland. He was active in the students' Solidarity movement in Poland in the early eighties. In 1983 he became a practitioner of Buddhism. He left Poland in 1985 and during the next three years co-ran the Karma Kagyu Buddhist center in Copenhagen, Denmark. He traveled extensively in Nepal, India, Bhutan, Burma, and Tibet, receiving initiations and teachings from high Kagyu and Nyingma lamas. He translated at Buddhist lectures into Polish and Spanish for more than ten years. He has contributed to the Buddhist magazines Kagyu Life in Germany and Diamentowa Droga in Poland. Since 1989 he has been involved in setting up Karma Kagyu centers in the Americas, Australia and New Zealand, and Russia as well as Western and Eastern Europe.

Strong bias weakens credibility of this book

I was looking forward to hearing more about the current controversy regarding the two Karmapas in the Kagyu lineage. Unfortunately, the author of this book, rather than being objective, has a very strong bias towards one side, and his invectives again the other show he has no interest in any sort of 'even handedness'.
After reading the shrill denouncements of anyone not in 100% agreement with the authors viewpoint, I felt all information in the book was suspect.

Human Buddhas

As a student of Thrangu Rinpoche and Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, all these kind of books do is foment anger and division among people that cannot be divided. The Dalai Lama has stated that both Karmapas can be emanations of past Karmapas. This is very common, as Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye has been reborn in literally dozens of Lamas. The Shamarpa's Karmapa can certainly be a bodhisattva, but the Shamarpas have a dark and colorful history of causing dissent and violence within the Karma Kagyu. Remember that the present Shamarpa is a tulku of past Shamarpas, a lineage that was banned several hundred years ago for its controversy and meddling. My Karmapa, Orgyen Trinley Dorje, has shown again and again his grace and dignity in every supposed controversy, always deflecting controversy and turning his statements to the Dharma. The same cannot be said of Ole Nydahl and some of his followers. This "lama" has recently said hateful things in public about Muslims in Europe, and caused much pain and distress among Buddhists and Muslims. Proof of Buddhahood should be in the pudding, and Orgyen Trinley Dorje has brought peace to every situation. Ole Nydahl has not. The other Karmapa's influence remains to be seen. Could we pray that perhaps the Karmapas could meet? Orgyen Trinley Dorje even called for a peaceful meeting with the Shamarpa, which all recorded as an amicable meeting. This MUST be the way of the Dharma.

Observation of Reviews

In case you haven't noticed already, the reviewers for this book fall into two factions: those for whom H.H. Trinlay Thaye Dorje is the 17th Karmapa and those for whom he is not. This causes the polarity in ratings, most of which are 1 star or 5. So much disagreement, how exciting. Simply put, Mr. Lehnert writes what he knows, which is what every author does. There are no unbiased authors, just as there are no unbiased reviewers.

Wonderful, and still relevant, novel

This book is absolutely amazing. It describes a time in the future where censorship prevails and minds are caged. Nobody has original thoughts; with the abolishing of books creativity was lost as well. Guy Montag, the protagonist, is a fireman (firemen burn books in this story) who has to fight to pull himself from the grip of an overpowering government and tradition, only to see that it is all useless (why teach to people who can't understand?). The novel shows what censorship can do to a society, and why individuals must not accept the norm without questioning its integrity and implications. Overall, read this book immediately and apply what you learn from it into everyday life.
By the way, ignore all of the reviewers that gave the book a low score because they could not understand the plot and symbolism. Their comments are similar to saying Shakespeare's works are poorly written because he uses odd vocabulary and the plot is too complex. Unfortunately, these people make of the mass of society, which is why these reviews are commonplace. (The funny thing is, the novel specifically targets these kind of people...)

Metaphor and Reality collide

When I began teaching three years ago, I was required to teach this book. Having never read it before, I began reading it just before our winter break. As I soaked up the story of the book, I realized my students were already living it. They begged me daily, "Ms. Hill, why do we have to read this stupid book? Can't we just watch the movie?" As I got deeper and deeper into the book, I grew increasingly depressed about the future of the world.
Then I realized: Bradbury has given me a picture of what might be, if we are not careful. His book written nearly fifty years ago peers just twenty minutes into the future now. Technological developments he had no name for then are very real today. For example, his seashell radio is clearly the walkman many of us see pressed in the ears of teenagers daily. TV screens are growing larger and larger and flat screens with HDTV are on the market now. The next step is clearly the full wall television of Mildred's parlor. Robot dogs like Aibo are just a hop skip and a jump away from the dreaded hound.
But this is a future preventable. Maybe. But if popular culture is constantly valued above thoughtful consideration and education, we'll march right into a land of burning books and intellectualism on the run.
Bradbury's book made me feel defiant. They could never take my books from me. They could burn me with them if they want, but that's what it'll take before I give up my freedom to think for myself.
And as for my students, they remind me every day what an uphill battle I have been sent to fight.

Fiction? Really?

"Fahrenheit 451" is a simply great book. Yes, it's quite distressing and unpleasant to read - because what Bradbury describes is much closer to truth than we'd like it to be. And that is precisely what makes the reality of the book so alike our own - it's more pleasant not to think about such things, and therefore one can merely say the book doesn't suit one's taste and go 'get entertained' in front of the TV.
The disturbing thing about the book is that, unlike many other books that deal with the distant future, "Fahrenheit 451" (written in 1953) hasn't been proved wrong simply by time itself. Not at all. Actually, what is shocking to realize is that we've come quite close to the society Bradbury writes about. Perhaps books haven't been banned yet, but it is indeed the entertainment industry that controls people's minds, the political correctness has reached ridiculous levels, there are ads everywhere and now we even have Segways so that we don't have to walk anywhere... And, of course, we can get a thousand page long classics shortened to a hundred pages - or, better yet, simply watch the movie.
The book also has other qualities besides making one think (which is, judging by some other reviews, one of its biggest downsides). One cannot but admire the brilliant way Bradbury uses absurd and creates a completely surreal feeling by using the methods of expressionism to describe the feelings and thoughts of the main character.
Bradbury sure had things to write about - and that can be proved by even something as simple as the fact I've spent the last half an hour writing a review on the Internet rather than reading a good book or looking at the world...

Only difference between 12th and 13th edition is page numbers.

I used this text as a student, and then afterwards to help teach a nutrition class at Oakland Community College. I saved $180 by buying the previous edition and had the exact same material, just on different page numbers.
